  2. One day after California’s Democratic party urged candidates without a “viable path” in the state’s crucial race for governor to drop out,
    the crowded field showed no sign of winnowing down.

    At least nine Democrats are in the running to replace the outgoing governor, Gavin Newsom,
    with no clear frontrunner,
    💥which has fueled fears that the number of candidates could lead to two Republicans advancing to the November election.

    Rusty Hicks, the chair of California’s Democratic party, warned in an open letter on Tuesday about that “unlikely” but “possible” scenario and called on candidates to
    “act in a responsible manner with the opportunities and support we have earned”.

    He advised candidates not to run in the primary if they don’t have a path to reach the general election,
    and said they should be prepared to suspend their campaigns within the next month if they hadn’t made “meaningful progress” toward a primary win.

    The packed field of Democratic candidates includes
    former secretary of health and human services and state attorney general Xavier #Becerra;
    former state lawmaker Ian Calderon; San Jose’s mayor, Matt #Mahan;
    former congresswoman Katie #Porter;
    billionaire environmental activist Tom #Steyer;
    the Congress member Eric #Swalwell;
    the state schools superintendent, Tony #Thurmond;
    former mayor of Los Angeles Antonio #Villaraigosa;
    and former state controller Betty #Yee.

    The Republican candidates include
    Chad #Bianco, the Riverside county sheriff,
    and the conservative political commentator Steve #Hilton.

    The nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California found the race had split into two distinct groups,
    with polling indicating Hilton, Porter, Bianco, Swalwell and Steyer are in close competition,
    while the other candidates trail behind

  7. Ken Paxton thinks your business is his business

    Look at Texas, where state Attorney General #Ken #Paxton just sued the Biden administration
    💥to block a new rule that protects the medical records of people who cross state lines to obtain abortions.

    As Health and Human Services Secretary #Xavier #Becerra explained when announcing the rule,
    “Many Americans are scared their private medical information will be shared, misused, and disclosed without permission ... ✅ the Biden-Harris Administration is providing stronger protections to people seeking lawful reproductive health care regardless of whether the care is in their home state or if they must cross state lines to get it.”

    Texas’s lawsuit alleges that the rule interferes with its ability to enforce its own laws on reproductive health.

    Of course, the rule does no such thing. -- Texas remains fully able to enforce its extreme abortion ban within its borders.

    ❇️ All the rule does is 👍prevent Texas from reaching into other states to demand patient records when people obtain reproductive health care that is legal in that state.

    ⚠️Texas Republicans are also mad that the rule requires reproductive health care to be “interpreted broadly and inclusive of all types of health care related to an individual’s reproductive system”
    — which means 👍it could also protect the records of people seeking gender-affirming care outside the state.

  8. The burgeoning field to be California’s next governor grew even more crowded Friday as #Toni #Atkins, the San Diego Democrat who has held the state’s top legislative posts, launched a bid to succeed Gov #Gavin. #Newsom in 2026.

    Atkins — who has made history several times over as the first out #lesbian to be Assembly Speaker, as well as the first woman and LGBTQ+ person to lead the Senate — is betting that her long resume in elected office coupled with her boundary-breaking profile is the winning formula to distinguish her from the pack

  9. Health and Human Services Secretary #Xavier #Becerra is considering leaving the Biden administration to mount a run for #California #governor in 2026, people briefed on his deliberations told POLITICO.
    Becerra and supporters have had conversations over the past weeks where the secretary and former California attorney general indicated to fellow Democratic officials and operatives that he would leave Washington after the November election and join the crowded field to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom in two years.

  10. Rep. Barbara Lee files bid for the open Senate seat in California.

    If elected, #Lee would be just the third Black woman to serve in the US Senate, with none serving at present.

    There is a crowded field seeking to succeed Diane Feinstein who announced her retirement yesterday.

    Katie #Porter was first elected to her Southern California seat in the 2018 midterms and has earned prominence and praise from progressives for her focused questioning of witnesses in House oversight hearings. She’s also been endorsed by her former law school professor, Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

    Adam #Schiff, a Los Angeles-area congressman, was first elected in 2000 and gained national attention during the Trump administration, serving in high-profile roles on the House Intelligence Committee and in both Trump impeachment proceedings.

    Additional contenders could join the open Senate race in the nation’s largest state. Democratic Rep. Ro #Khanna has publicly expressed interest in running.

    Other potential candidates include Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier #Becerra – a former California attorney general – and San Francisco Mayor London #Breed.
