  3. "But GOP support for Trump is not some sort of permanent, transcendent truth. It’s a choice, and they have the power, every one of them, to choose differently.

    Lisa Murkowski could switch parties; Marco Rubio could resign; John Kennedy could refuse to approve judges. They all have agency and they all have real power."

  4. "[Eric Swalwell's] party simply withdrew its support in a decisive and effective way. If Republicans did the same for Trump, he would also be isolated and would also face enormous pressure to resign.

    Of course, Republians aren’t going to do that because they are a fascist, pro-abuser party and they like their fascist abusive president."

    “But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress,” Swalwell wrote.

  17. Maybe #Swalwell did all the things years ago to only party connected women but I also know that right now, Dems fear that too many candidates could lose them the CA governorship. It's also convenient how quickly the party is deciding he's guilty. Of course pointing out this convenient timing is itself disrespectful etc etc. Just STFU right?

  18. At times, little Eric apparently did the thinking for big Eric.

    Unless this is an outrageously brazen hit job, bye-bye political career.

    Narrator: It does not appear to be an outrageously brazen hit job. Despite the economic downturn, many used car lots are still hiring!

  19. "Let's wait and see what the investigation shows! Anyway, the timing is suspicious! Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?"

    The political arena is not a courtroom. Elections are not trials. We the People are not prosecutors, or defense attorneys, or judges. Maybe we're closest to being jurors, but even that is a lousy analogy. There is no obligation to follow rules of evidence or procedure. But there *is* an obligation to do what we think is best, with the knowledge we have at the time.

    Eric #Swalwell should not go to prison without trial. Of course. He shouldn't be a candidate for the governorship of the most populous state in the country, either, under the current circumstances. All the #Democratic Party and the voters of #California can do right now is go with their guts.

    By way of analogy, when Donald #Trump first ran for President, he had not yet been found legally liable for any sexual offenses. We'd be better off today if more #Republicans had chosen not to hold their noses and ignore the unmistakable stink of sleaze radiating off the guy. Sauce for the goose ...

    And while I'm on that topic, all the cries about timing, the rumors of Roger Stone's involvement, etc.? Okay, it could be true. *Maybe* it's a plot to take down someone who was until recently a rising star. We know it happens.

    We also know, or should know, that abusers turn up in every walk of life, every job, every political party. Right now I'm catching more a whiff of "He can't be like that, he's one of Our People! That's a Those People problem!" Yeah. Never a good look.

    Throughout my life, I've been part of several quite different groups of Our People, and one thing they have in common is that they are very reluctant to admit repulsive behaviors right in front of their noses, because they're so sure only Those People do such things. Which makes me a lot less thrilled to be one of Our People than I was when I filled out my membership application.

    Maybe Swalwell didn't do any of what he's accused of. Maybe he did some, but not the worst. Maybe he did all of it and genuinely believed at the time that it was consensual. I acknowledge that any of those could be true.

    I just don't care. It's time for him to go.

  20. Pressure grows for Swalwell to exit governor’s race, criminal inquiry launched:

    True or not, #Swalwell is done. If true, he deserves it, and to be imprisoned for his crimes. If false, then we’re looking at a conspiracy to take over California. Regardless, disgusting. #uspol #calpol latimes.com/california/story/2

  21. CW: USpol, CApol (governor), Swalwell

    Several posts this week have encouraged primary voting, which you always love to see. Except it really only made me dread the open governor primary here more.

    I'm being faced with the unfortunate reality of not voting who I want in, and voting for the Democratic candidate leading the polling as to not have BOTH major GOP candidates on the ballot. What a dumpster fire.

    And whom has been leading the polls? Eric Swalwell? Yeah...fucking about that...

    Sure, liberals own the place here, but the thing I'm already detesting about California politics after just 6 months is how there isn't a single shred of altruism here among elected officals, just massive cults of ego.

    Okay, Mr. Cop-Fucker, here was the *only* response you should have made *regardless* of actual liability: There were serious accusations made against me, and it would be a disservice to the state if I remained in office and the governor's race. I respect the right of the alleged victims to be heard, and now must focus on making sure they are, while pleading my own case. After some deliberation, I will endorse one of my fellow colleagues. Thank you for your support while I work tirelessly to clear my name and rebuild trust.

    But no, of course not.

    How many people that always levy accusations elsewhere are actually responsible for the actual thing they decry? Way too many of them. You don't deserve a shred of trust or benefit of the doubt for acting like a complete victim. Fuck off for thinking that you still have a chance now. Stand aside.

    *Headdesks so hard he shatters his desk*

    EDIT: Aaaaaand he's out of the governor's race. A start that should've been the reality from the beginning.

  24. This turmoil in the race came after the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday that a woman said #Swalwell sexually assaulted her in 2019 & 2024. She told the newspaper she did not go to police because she was afraid she would not be believed.

  29. One day after California’s Democratic party urged candidates without a “viable path” in the state’s crucial race for governor to drop out,
    the crowded field showed no sign of winnowing down.

    At least nine Democrats are in the running to replace the outgoing governor, Gavin Newsom,
    with no clear frontrunner,
    💥which has fueled fears that the number of candidates could lead to two Republicans advancing to the November election.

    Rusty Hicks, the chair of California’s Democratic party, warned in an open letter on Tuesday about that “unlikely” but “possible” scenario and called on candidates to
    “act in a responsible manner with the opportunities and support we have earned”.

    He advised candidates not to run in the primary if they don’t have a path to reach the general election,
    and said they should be prepared to suspend their campaigns within the next month if they hadn’t made “meaningful progress” toward a primary win.

    former secretary of health and human services and state attorney general Xavier #Becerra;
    former state lawmaker Ian Calderon; San Jose’s mayor, Matt #Mahan;
    former congresswoman Katie #Porter;
    billionaire environmental activist Tom #Steyer;
    the Congress member Eric #Swalwell;
    the state schools superintendent, Tony #Thurmond;
    former mayor of Los Angeles Antonio #Villaraigosa;
    and former state controller Betty #Yee.

    The Republican candidates include
    Chad #Bianco, the Riverside county sheriff,
    and the conservative political commentator Steve #Hilton.
