This so good, I couldn’t help but toot it. I never learned sign language but I applaud this school for making it available to students.

My Deafblind client and I encountered a signing Santa, Frosty the Snowman, and helper elf at Ingle Farm Village shopping centre. Santa even had a go at tactile Auslan after watching us

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Australians can now call emergency services with a 000 relay.
I love that it's called AEI, which is super memorable to sign in Auslan.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing people will now have access to 000 (triple zero emergency) calls in their own language (Auslan), 24/7 for the first time ever, with the Auslan Emergency Interpreting app. Long time coming.

This #WPA11yDay session has an #Auslan speaker who is being interpreted into spoken English and then interpreted into American Sign Language. Very cool to watch. #ASL #Deaf

@Rosaliesmedievalwoman #TIL that #Auslan = Australian sign language. The Wikipedia entry is interesting!

Right—I've started! This week I'm revising my Auslan fingerspelling, finally getting the fingershapes right. Now to practice, practice, practice.
This reminds me of when I was learning to touch type. I would type out words and whole sentences while travelling on the bus, with the right fingers, on my imaginary lap keyboard.
Question: should I tackle #ASL fingerspelling at the same time as learning Auslan? Or wait until I'm more fluent in the latter?
(…thread)

I speak English (well), French (well enough to be understood), and one sentence each in Spanish and Italian.
The next language I’d really like to be able to communicate in at a basic level is #Auslan. Australian Sign Language. Then I’d like to add ASL and BSL. Every school should make the sign language of their region part of the core curriculum.
Let’s all at least learn the alphabet! Time to end the isolation the #deaf community experiences every day.

It's contest season at Toastmasters. Last night my club had our Table Topics contest. I won first place, therefore going through to Area level (date TBA).
I also filled a gap in the agenda with an improvised presentation on "What Toastmasters can learn from Auslan". List buoys (the linguists' term for listing things on your fingers), facial expression, and role shift can enhance a speech.

Did you know word order in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is not the same as in English? It's a whole different "natural language"!
Apparently many Australian Aboriginal cultures have also had manually coded language, as signed counterparts of their oral languages!
Indigenous sign language is not only used by people with hearing loss. Many Indigenous languages are multi-modal!
There's the Warlpiri language, spoken by about 3,000 of the Warlpiri people in the Northern Territory, and there's Warlpiri Sign Language AKA Rdaka-rdaka ("hand signs") with about 1,500 signs.
And did you know there are one-handed and two-handed fingerspelling alphabets used in different English-speaking countries?
Auslan is a visual language using hand shape, orientation, location, movement, and expression! There's about 38 major hand shapes and 25ish variants.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Auslan today.

#AFLW made such a big thing of #Auslan #interpreters at the finals - but I haven't seen anything interpreted on TV tonight for the #AFLGF. Given the experience in-ground a few weeks ago, I imagine it's not perfect for people there (if it's there at all).

Amazing to have #Auslan interpreter at #AFLW finals. Poor in ground experience to have them not on the screen each time there is speech... #NorthMelbourne #Adelaide

A reunion with Theatre of the Deaf colleagues from 42 years ago prompted some thoughts about sign language interpreters, captions, and audio description:
-
Frustrating the #asl, #bsl, #auslan, and even the newer #Makaton (as well as other English sign variants) don't have more commonality. I would love a simplified #esperanto like sign language that transcends borders (coexisting with, and complimenting traditional signing). I understand why things are the way they are, I don't have to like it though! Another thing on my to-do list for when I become Supreme Ruler of Earth!

At least one Deafblind person thought Biden was the first female President of the USA. This was because:
1 they'd never met a male named Joe, only females named Jo
2 they'd never seen a picture of him or heard his voice
3 sign languages generally don't have gendered pronouns. Instead you establish the person's spot in the signing space and point to that spot -
It's ##Auslan day, commemorating the publishing of the first Auslan dictionary on April 13th 1989.

All done with #DebLearnsAuslan 101 class! I wholeheartedly recommend this six-session class by Expression Australia. Educational, fun, low pressure and collegiate, and if you get Des as your teacher, make sure you make a red panda joke. https://www.expression.com.au/services/auslan #Auslan #SignLanguage

TIL at #woodfordFolkFestival that the #auslan gesture for "toxic" appears to be what teenage me would recognise ad "the dickhead gesture".

To my disabled artist friends and friends-to-be, I organise a free once-a-month online art get together where we show-and-tell in the first half, and in the second half do art while listening to licensed music from disabled musicians. It is very relaxed and has Auslan interpretation (we are based in Australia but do get international visitors).
If that sounds like something you would like to be part of then here's the link to where you can book your spot to get the online detailshttps://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/online-art-friends-tickets-428907974297
