  1. Did you know word order in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is not the same as in English? It's a whole different "natural language"!

Apparently many Australian Aboriginal cultures have also had manually coded language, as signed counterparts of their oral languages!

Indigenous sign language is not only used by people with hearing loss. Many Indigenous languages are multi-modal!

There's the Warlpiri language, spoken by about 3,000 of the Warlpiri people in the Northern Territory, and there's Warlpiri Sign Language AKA Rdaka-rdaka ("hand signs") with about 1,500 signs.

And did you know there are one-handed and two-handed fingerspelling alphabets used in different English-speaking countries?

Auslan is a visual language using hand shape, orientation, location, movement, and expression! There's about 38 major hand shapes and 25ish variants.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Auslan today.

  2. #AFLW made such a big thing of #Auslan #interpreters at the finals - but I haven't seen anything interpreted on TV tonight for the #AFLGF. Given the experience in-ground a few weeks ago, I imagine it's not perfect for people there (if it's there at all).

  3. Frustrating the #asl, #bsl, #auslan, and even the newer #Makaton (as well as other English sign variants) don't have more commonality. I would love a simplified #esperanto like sign language that transcends borders (coexisting with, and complimenting traditional signing). I understand why things are the way they are, I don't have to like it though! Another thing on my to-do list for when I become Supreme Ruler of Earth!

  4. TIL at #woodfordFolkFestival that the #auslan gesture for "toxic" appears to be what teenage me would recognise ad "the dickhead gesture".

  5. To my disabled artist friends and friends-to-be, I organise a free once-a-month online art get together where we show-and-tell in the first half, and in the second half do art while listening to licensed music from disabled musicians. It is very relaxed and has Auslan interpretation (we are based in Australia but do get international visitors).
If that sounds like something you would like to be part of then here's the link to where you can book your spot to get the online details
