  1. I tried looking at Elk and Pinafore today since I'm on my Mac, and I realized I really and truly never liked the way twitter looks on the desktop and do not want to emulate it, especially not with even more empty, unused space. Plus, no Trending timeline. So they aren't for me. #AppTryOut

  3. Well, I went to try out Mona to see if I like it, and got as far as it saying I needed to buy the Pro version to like a toot, and peaced out. Tf kind of 14 day trial is so limited it doesn’t allow basic functionality? #AppTryOut

  5. Oh, that’s nice of #IceCubes to do! I love having all those options there immediately when you choose to mute someone! #AppTryOut

  7. One very nice thing I like about #IceCubes is how you can set what it does when you swipe left or right. I have it set to give me the option to quote boost when I swipe left. #AppTryOut

  9. I was going to try out #Woolly to see what it was like, then got to the “upgrade to post” screen, saw it was a subscription, then laughed and laughed and uninstalled it.

I have no issues buying an app. I have zero issues paying for major upgrades to an app. I have all the issues with subscription services. Save your money; I wasn’t that impressed even before it asked me to pay. I was thinking it was solid but missing a few things like sharing as an image and boosting options. #AppTryOut

  11. I tried to post this with #Mammoth from my phone’s share screen, and it immediately crashed. So that’s great. 😕 #AppTryOut

  13. Ok, going back to Toot. I’ll wait on #Mammoth until it’s got some of the kinks worked out, because I’ve lost replies I’ve written and some things I thought boosted (so I could reply to the posts using Toot, ironically enough) didn’t. It seems really good, but that’s a bit of wonky I can’t handle. I’ll try it again after some patches and updates. #AppTryOut

  15. Ok, NOT digging how #Mammoth does not seem to be posting my replies to people. That’s super not ok. #AppTryOut

  17. Ok, thing I DON’T like about #Mammoth is yet you can’t boost a post with if you’re browsing another server. That’s unfortunate. #AppTryOut

  19. #Mammoth seems to handle sharing toots like #Toot does - you can share them as an image, text, or link. I like the way Toot formats the image, but like how Mammoth lets you pick the font size the image uses. #AppTryOut

I really like how #IceCubes lets you quote post by basically sharing as link, but including the user you got it from so they get a notification.

  21. Ooh, I like the Explore tab in #Mammoth. It’s really sleek. #AppTryOut

  25. I really, really want to like #IceCubes, y’all. I really do. ;_; But there are still so many annoying little issues, like how it wouldn’t like or boost a toot I just saw of a cute cat. Or maybe it did and the icons didn’t change. It’s got so many little issues. I still think it’s going to be really something in a few months, though. #AppTryOut

  27. Wow, #IceCubes just loves crashing on me. ><

As much as it has a lot of potential, that’s the main reason I can’t recommend it yet. Not until it’s been through more bug fixes. #AppTryOut

  28. I will say this for #IceCubes - so far, it’s definitely the best free app for iPad. But unfortunately, a lot of that is by default, because the other apps are so completely underwhelming on iPad. It does it right, but the others do it really wrong. #AppTryOut

  29. My current take on #IceCubes is that it’s not quite ready. It’s got a lot of potential, but also it’s kinda buggy. It’s crashed on me a few times today. I can’t quite recommend it yet, but I feel like it’ll be really good in a few months with a few more patches and updates. #AppTryOut.

  30. I tried to post that last toot about Hymn to the Sun from #IceCubes, but it seemed to be having issues navigating the change from light mode to dark mode and was giving me white text on a white background. 😅 #AppTryOut

  31. It lets you pick what the third column will be in the iPad app, which is great! #IceCubes #AppTryOut

  32. Oh, nice! #IceCubes on iPad makes really nice use of all the extra space by having a third column for notifications, so you can see them while reading new posts. #AppTryOut

  33. One thing that the official Mastodon app does better than the other apps I’ve tried is how it embed links. It does then really nicely! Like, if you link to a YouTube video, you can watch it in the toot, instead of having to go to a YouTube page. #AppTryOut

  34. One thing I like about the official Mastodon app is how it handles embedded links.

One thing I do not like is how it can not handle screenshots from the screenshot page and gives me an error message that it “Can not recognize this media attachment.” (Thus no image showing what I like.) My app in Christ, it is a picture. #AppTryOut

  35. I used #tooot, #IceCubes, and the official app over the last few days, but I was so busy I honestly don’t remember anything about any of them lol. I was also online a lot less. So I’m gonna have to give them usage days again. Today is the official app. #AppTryOut

  36. Oh, now this is nice! I’m trying out the default Mastodon app for the #AppTryOut, and I really life what they’ve done with the iPad app! I was doublechecking to see if I accidentally double posted something, so I went to my user page, and saw how they’ve got the column to show what’s popular. It’s a great use of the space the iPad offers!

  38. I definitely like that #tooot lets you swipe between your home, local, and federated timelines. Very few apps seem to do that, even though it’s so useful. I’d much rather swipe than tap a menu. #AppTryOut

  40. Y’all. I just made a damn spreadsheet so I can keep track of features and problems in these #apps I’m testing out. A SPREADSHEET. Clearly I have lost my mind. #AppTryOut

  42. Lol I am so confused because #IceCubes is set to English and all my displays are in English, but the translate button is there for every English toot and pushing it gives me a Japanese translation. Plus it still thinks I’m posting in Japanese until I manually change the language select. Let me check more settings. 🤣 #AppTryOut

  43. Oh, nice! #IceCubes lets you read the local page of other instances, AND interact with them - meaning you can boost, favorite, and reply to them. After one app where you could read but not interact with other local timelines, I no longer take that for granted. #AppTryOut

  44. …and the “Correct text” option in the #IceCubes posting menu seems to think that I shouldn’t use hashtags IN the post, just at the end, so I won’t be using that. XD

I also only just noticed it thought I was typing in Japanese, not English, for the language setting. That’s odd, because my iPad, unlike my phone, is set for English. XD lol weird #AppTryOut

  45. The #IceCubes app also doesn’t quite know how to take advantage of all the extra space an iPad gives you, but it’s an improvement over the other apps I’ve used recently because at least it moves the bottom menu bar to the side, where it is much easier to access. I do wish, though, that it expanded the menu bar to a larger column with more information, not just icons. #AppTryOut

  46. Oh wait, nope. #tootoise doesn’t have a way to add an image description?! Ok, yeah, no. You can preview the image, which is great yesterday after Mastoot, but you can’t add alt text. BOO.

I might not last the full day with this app, y’all. #AppTryOut

  47. It seems like there’s no option in #Mastoot to automatically display everything that’sthat’s behind a content warning? I usually set my app to always open those because I’m not really fussed about CWs and want to cut down on superfluous clicking and tapping. #AppTryOut

  48. I ought to explain the Great #AppTryOut, eh?

Basically, I’m trying out a big bunch of the free iOS apps, because there are a lot of them, and it can be overwhelming when you’re starting out. I like being able to recommend apps for people starting out on #Mastodon, and there are a LOT more apps from when I was first trying out apps to find one I liked!

Every day, I’m going to only use one app, on my iPhone and iPad. When I’m done, I’ll write up the pluses and minutes of each.

  49. I just noticed #Mastoot doesn’t display the like, boost, favorite options under a toot. You have to either click on the toot to open it, swipe left or right, or click on the three dots. It’s an interesting design choice. It means you focus just on the words, but it also means having to do an extra click to actually interact with a toot. My wrist still hurts from last week, so I feel each extra hand movement. #AppTryOut

  50. Ok, I’m going to need a character count lol. #Mastoot does not give you a character count, and you don’t know you’ve gone over until you try to post…and it just says you’ve gone over, and not by how much. One character? Twenty? Who knows! But get to editing! #Mastoot #AppTryOut

  51. Oh, oh no, I also don’t like that adding an image description takes you to a screen that DOESN’T show the image. Y’all. I talked yesterday about my 5-second, ADHD goldfish short term memory. #Mastoot #AppTryOut

  52. Welp. I was going to immediately praise #Mastoot for having a posts, posts and replies, and media tab on your personal page (Toot doesn’t, unfortunately) and joke about being embarrassed by having THAT high of a post count, only to get slapped with an “unsupported file type” error when I tried to share from the iOS screenshot screen. I had to save the screenshots to photos and them and them. That’s so inconvenient and it means I have to manually delete the images later. Boo. #AppTryOut

  53. Yesterday in my Great #AppTryOut, I spent the day using #tusker. Today, I’m trying out #Mastoot. Like I did with Tusker, I won’t use any other Mastodon app the whole day.

  54. It seems like it just REALLY hates the mstdn.osaka server, because it can’t find it and crashed AGAIN when I searched for it. But it worked with no issues when I searched for a different server. Weird. #tusker #AppTryOut

  55. Well, #tusker just crashed as I was searching for other instances to add to the Instance Timelines. Until the crash, though, it was running really smoothly, and I was genuinely liking how just buttery finding and added new instances to follow was - I had really quickly added two instances, and was in the process of adding a third when it crashed. I won’t hold that too much against it, since I know it’s still being worked on, and I am liking how it handles this overall. #AppTryOut

  56. Another neat little thing #Tusker does is the Discovery menu, and it’s profile directory. It will show people in your instance or federation who have posted recently, and seems like a good way to find new people!

A not neat thing is you can’t click on the image you’re sharing to enlarge it so you can write a better image description! I’m having to rely on my 5-second max #adhd short term memory and lolololol oh no #AppTryOut

  57. Thing I am NOT digging about #tooot - clicking on a link does not seem to open it. Wtf. #AppTryOut

  58. Oooh, #tooot has a translate function built in! That, I’m digging a lot. #AppTryOut
