Canadian #wildfire smoke turns air hazardous in the US #Midwest. Officials say stay inside
By TAMMY WEBBER and PHILIP MARCELO, July 16, 2026
NEW YORK (AP) — "Heavy, pungent smoke from #CanadianWildfires darkened skies in the U.S. on Thursday from the #GreatLakes to parts of the #EastCoast, reducing visibility for commuters and prompting warnings that air quality could make being outside dangerous.
"#Detroit’s air quality was among the worst in the world for major cities, as a lingering high pressure system trapped smoke from dozens of fires in Canada and northern Minnesota, said Steven Freitag, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Pontiac, Michigan.
" 'Sure enough, it arrived in force here and it’s really pretty extreme levels,' said Freitag, who noted that visibility in some areas was reduced to a half mile.
"Omar Mitchell wore a mask as he walked to his restaurant in Detroit. He said he urged his employees to do the same.
" 'It’s scary,' Mitchell, 50, said as he looked at the sky. 'You don’t know necessarily what the side effects may be. That’s days or months later.'
"Cities across the Great Lakes states registered air quality ranging from unhealthy to hazardous — which means it’s unhealthy for anyone, regardless of health conditions. Microscopic particles can lodge deep in the lungs and enter the bloodstream, leading to heart and lung problems and contributing to other long-term health issues.
"All of #Michigan and much of #Minnesota were under a hazardous #AirQualityAlert. In the Chicago area, air quality ranged from very unhealthy to hazardous.
"National Weather Service meteorologist Jake Petr said even if winds from the northwest clear skies as expected later this week, the smoky air could keep returning until the fires are out. That could take weeks or longer.
" 'Anytime we have something that could bring air from that region until the fires are over, it could conceivably dip back into the area,' Petr said.
"In #SaintPaulMN, the air was 'glowing yellow,' said Brent Williams, head of the soil, water and climate department at the University of Minnesota, who said the area 'could be looking at weeks to months of continued smoke and flare-ups off and on as the winds blow in different directions.'
"A study published this year found that long-term exposure to tiny particles from wildfire smoke contributed to an average of 24,100 deaths a year in the lower 48 states. Long-term exposure can make existing health problems worse and lead to a range of chronic and deadly health issues, including respiratory illness, cardiovascular and neurological diseases, and premature death."

Ayuh... And my friends with asthma are stuck indoors. Be safe friends!
#Wildfire Smoke Spreads Across the #Northeast as Temperatures Spike
A heat dome is responsible for miserably high temperatures, and it’s also helping to push smoke from wildfires to the east.
By Judson Jones and Mark Walker
July 15, 2026"From the windows of office buildings across Manhattan, the blue sky turned hazy on Tuesday as wildfire smoke from #Canada and the #GreatLakes slipped across the Northeast, prompting alerts in some places about poor air quality.
"The haze is expected to continue on Wednesday, and even to worsen in some places, as the same heat dome that is pushing temperatures close to 100 degrees across much of eastern Canada and the United States traps the smoke from faraway wildfires close to the ground.
"In New York, city officials warned of 'the possibility of deteriorating air quality' throughout the day Wednesday, but noted that even the most severe forecasts for did not approach the levels seen in 2023, when the Canadian wildfire smoke sent the city’s air quality index surging to dangerous levels. Still, they said, echoing the warnings of officials across the region, people with health conditions that make them sensitive to polluted air should take caution.
"The heat dome, an area of high pressure in the atmosphere, was visible on satellite imagery on Tuesday as an area of clear sky over the middle of the country, where the surrounding air moves clockwise. On the ground, it manifests as a hot, humid and smoky stew that can make just stepping outdoors an unpleasant task.
"Across much of the United States and southern Canada, weather officials have placed tens of millions of people under heat warnings, with high temperatures from the upper 90s to above 100 degrees expected in many places on Wednesday."The National Weather Service said that nearly 100 million people from the Dakotas into New England would be under its 'major' or 'extreme' warning levels for dangerous heat. Environment Canada, the country’s weather service, said that, through Wednesday, southern Ontario would be under an orange alert, the second most severe in its three-tier system."

Taking a dip #LaborDay weekend? Swimmers face fecal contamination at beaches along US coastline
By PATRICK WHITTLE and MINGSON LAU
Updated 10:15 AM EDT, August 30, 2025OGUNQUIT, Maine (AP) — "Thousands of Americans will head to beaches for one last summer splash this Labor Day weekend, but taking a dip might be out of the question: Many of the beaches will caution against swimming because of unsafe levels of fecal contamination.
"Beaches from #CrystalRiverFL, to #OgunquitME, have been under advisories warning about water quality this week because of elevated levels of bacteria associated with fecal waste. The advisories typically discourage beachgoers from going in the water because the bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illness, rashes and nausea.
"There have been closures this week at some of the country’s most popular beach destinations, including Keyes Memorial Beach in the #CapeCod village of Hyannis in Barnstable, Massachusetts; Benjamin’s Beach on #LongIsland in Bay Shore, New York; and a portion of the Imperial Beach shoreline near #SanDiego. Even on the pristine, white sand beaches of Hawaii, the Hawaii State Department of Health is warning of a high bacteria count at #KahaluuBeachPark on the #BigIsland.
"It’s a longstanding and widespread problem. Nearly two-thirds of beaches tested nationwide in 2024 experienced at least one day in which indicators of fecal contamination reached potentially unsafe levels, conservation group Environment America said in a report issued this summer.
"The group reviewed beaches on the coasts and #GreatLakes and found that 84% of #GulfCoast beaches exceeded the standard at least once. The number was 79% for #WestCoast beaches, 54% for #EastCoast beaches and 71% for #GreatLakes beaches."The report also said more than 450 beaches were potentially unsafe for swimming on at least 25 percent of the days tested. A key reason is outdated water and #SewerSystems that allows contamination from #sewage to reach the places where people swim, said John Rumpler, clean water director and senior attorney with #EnvironmentAmerica.
" 'These beaches are a treasure for families across New England and across the country. They are a shared resource,' said Rumpler, who is based in Boston. 'We need to make the investment to make sure that literally our own #HumanWaste doesn’t wind up in the places where we are swimming.'
"Other factors have also played a role in contaminating beaches, including increasingly #SevereWeather that overwhelms sewage systems, and suburban sprawl that paves over natural areas and reduces the #ecosystem’s ability to absorb #stormwater, Rumpler said."
