  1. This was REALLY good! I liked this a lot! Good story, good acting, and just really well done.
It’s 1950s “science” and there is ONE bit towards the end that doesn’t really make sense for me, but forgiving that, a GREAT little film.

  2. 90 minutes is WAY too long for the plot.
Takes way too long to get going. Once it does, it’s OK, and I mean just OK.

  3. Cool to see Christopher Lee and Boris Karloff together, but it’s unfortunate that the story isn’t worthy of their talents. It’s almost there, but it feels very well worn and I’m not sure the ending really works.

  4. Hammer Studio’s take of the Lady Bathory legend.
A decent cast with a few recognizable faces makes this a worth while watch.
That said, as beautiful as Ingrid Pitt was at 34 years old, she did NOT look 19! The name may have gotten people in the seats, but they probably should have found someone a little younger.

  5. Price, Lorre, and Rathbone are each amazing in this Roger Corman directed trio of spooky tales! (Loved the humor of the 2nd story. Lorre and Price looked to be have SO much fun!)

  6. Ah, 80s horror. Where the kills are arbitrary and the plots don’t matter!
This practically made-for-TV level horror is about as mediocre as they come.

  7. Less than 90 minutes but feels twice that length.
Takes way too long to get to the heart of the film thanks to many, many scenes that fail to really add anything to the story or the characters. And the ending… really?!

  8. VERY low budget direct-to-video horror film from the 80s.
Suffers from some non-actors and some terrible audio quality. (And maybe some poor direction… editing…some cinematography could have been better…)

  9. I’ve not watched this without someone riffing over it.
I can’t say it has been unfairly maligned.
There are glimmers of competent film making, but they are so over shadowed by the absolutely ridiculous plot that it just doesn’t matter.

  10. For night 30 of #31NightsofHalloween #MicrosCreepy, here are some amoebae squished under a jello-like pad. The flashes you see are contractile vacuole pumping events-- this organelle colllects and expels water (like bailing water out of a boat!)

  12. For night 28 of #31NightsOfHalloween #MicrosCreepy,
IT'S ALIVE! These are reanimated cell "ghosts," which are cells that have had their membranes/cytoplasm washed away, leaving the cytoskeleton behind. Adding ATP activates myosin motors, which causes contraction!

  14. 24. Deep Red (1975) – it wasn't even a #horror #movie, more like a #thriller.
For a Vincent Price #film I switched to The Pit and the Pendulum due to #Netflix adaptation of #HouseofUsher. It's mostly enjoyable.

Here is some actin cytoskeleton staining of cells crawling into microchannels.

Some actin cytoskeletons and nuclei appearing out of nowhere...

Here's a closer look at the cell division fail from yesterday. The contractile vacuole network gets distributed through the cell during division- here you can see tubules converting to bladders that pump unusually synchronously

  18. 16/ #31nightsofhalloween #MicrosCreepy
These are the cells that created yesterday's maximum intensity projection! Featuring one failed cell division, and one successful cell division. Lots of contractile vacuole activity.

  19. 11. #Candyman (1992) – a small correction to the list, as it's almost always better to watch the original. It was okay.
    12. The #Apparition (2012) – Probably third most boring #horror so far, and only because the other two were even more terrible. Also apparently one of the characters is Draco Malfoy?
#Fridaythe13th comes next. It's obviously not #friday anymore, but I was unlucky enough to have had not time yesterday. Also been to #Archive #concert.

  20. Second week of #31NightsOfHalloween:
    7. The Lords of #Salem (2012) – way better than Suspiria and Grotesque, but still kinda boring.
    8. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon – I really liked it! Though a little too predictive.
    9. #M3gan (2022)– not bad.
    10. Shaun of the #Dead (2004) – I loved it. It was just stupid enough to be very funny. Plus it was on my list anyway as a part of #Cornetto trilogy.

Here's some amoebae squashed under an agarose pad, imaged using IRM and Phase Contrast (second half only). The bright flashes are contractile vacuole pumping events!

I got to play with a very cool microscope today!
    purple: actin
    orange: mitotic spindle

    Gummy worms!

... or the tracks of cells before (green) vs after (orange) being squashed to a 5 micron ceiling. They tend to crawl faster when squished. Circles are the pillars holding up the ceiling.

  25. For night 21 of #31nightsofhalloween #MicrosCreepy, here are some fall leaves \@Sarahmoeba and I collected!

  26. For night 20 of #31NightsOfHalloween #MicrosCreepy,
here are some branching crystals from a dried-up sample!

  27. For night 19 of #31NightsOfHalloween #MicrosCreepy,
here is a 3D rendering of Naegleria's mitotic spindle, projected using \@UCSFChimeraX
