  1. Good morning Mastodonians! Late getting in today; was having my oil changed (and none too soon). Car doing well, will likely need brake work in the new year, but that's a while away. Also took advantage and picked up a prescription, dropped off dry cleaning, and bought a pumpkin. YAY!

Boss is in today too, so we got to catch up for a while and discuss what needs doing around here.

  2. Musical Interlude: It's spooky season, time for something weeeeeird. The Shaggs were a sisters forced into being musicians by their father, who believed a prediction that they would become famous. Their music, bizarrely composed and naively written, is held up as either being catastrophically bad or brilliant outsider art. I find their music strangely fascinating. They had no interest in being musicians and quit as soon as their father died, but they did achieve fame, so the prediction came true...

"It's Halloween," performed by the Shaggs.

  3. "Ada King, Countess of Lovelace," Margaret Sarah Carpenter, 1836.

Carpenter (1793-1872) was an English portrait painter, who began in her 20s and received much praise through her life. (Typical of Victorian sexism, she was praised especially for producing art that was good "for a woman.") She married a noted antiquary, two of her children became painters, and she was an aunt to author Wilkie Collins.

Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, otherwise known as Ada Lovelace (1815-52) was a noted mathematician. Daughter of Lord Byron, she was acquainted with many scientists and authors, and worked with Charles Babbage on his proto-computer, the Difference Engine. Lovelace was the first to realize this had applications beyond mere calculation, stating that someday it would compose music, and is regarded as the first computer programmer.

The second Tuesday of October is known now as Ada Lovelace Day, to honor and recognize women in STEM. Statues and paintings of her abound, and awards are named for her.

Part of the UK's Government Art Collection.

  4. Good morning Mastodonians! Back from vacation, back at the office! Fun stuff. Boss is telecommuting so at least I can take it somewhat easy, but I have so much to get caught up on. My holiday was pleasant...lots of rambling on Delmarva, visiting old churches and roaming in forests, and paying a call on some friends who just retired to Delaware. (I have no plans on moving there.)

How're all my friends & followers this morning?

  7. #WritersCoffeeClub 25/10: Tell us about inspiration from an unlikely source.

I’m more likely to take unlikely inspiration from a likely source. When rereading “Brier Rose,” I said to my girlfriend, “imagine the downstream economic effects on a pre-industrial agrarian society if you banned spindles.”

The Grimms never touched on that. And there “The Princess & the Mortgage Man” was born.
