    For #Python users:

    - It is easy to change the kernel (just a dropdown -and it will ask you to install ipykernel the first time)

    - It provides the exactly same interface and functionalities as with RSutdio (see above), some of which are key in data science and I’ve been missing for a long time: exploring environment, datasets, plots…

    - It is easy to select a python environment, even with conda environments!

    - Works great with #JupyterNotebooks

    Here is an approach to do #2D #RLE applied to the processing of #ECG images: link.springer.com/chapter/10.1, and also there is a 3D RLE approach for volumetric medical image data: tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108
    In my previous #Bioinformatics life, RLE was used, there is rle2() for the #Bio3D package which uses indices (thegrantlab.org/bio3d/referenc).
    Also, there is an improvement of RLE with a bit of Huffman encoding thrown in: arxiv.org/abs/2101.05329

  4. #rstats #lavaan structural equation modeling -- a postdoc developer position at University of Amsterdam werkenbij.uva.nl/en/vacancies/. I am familiar with the package although not with all of the internal class structures and stuff. I would be comfortable working on this after the two book clubs on @hadleywickham's Advanced R and R Packages through the @DSLC community led by @jonthegeek ... but you also need to know the freaking matrix calculus to follow Satorra's asymptotic theory.

  5. @djnavarro @milesmcbain @yjunechoe yup! Thankfully I'm mostly employed as an package expert, but there's a fair amount of and mixed in. That's fine with me; those are definitely very repurpose-able skillsets!

  6. Hello ! I'm facilitating a new free @DSLC Advanced R adv-r.hadley.nz cohort soon! It's been 5+ years since I read this excellent book by @hadleywickham , so I'm giving it a re-read. Let's learn to embrace {{ tidy evaluation }}, purrr::reduce() repetition, and count S/R systems!

    Join the DSLC.io Slack, then navigate to the -advr channel!

    BTW, I plan to cover {{ and in the club, even though they didn't make it into the book!

  12. TIL: before 1925, (some? British?) astronomers started the GMT day at noon (noon was 00:00:00), so "1924-12-30 23:00:00 GMT" would mean 11am on the morning of what we now call December 31. Be careful when working with historical datetime data, even if it's precisely specified!

    As far as I can find, neither lubridate nor clock have a way to deal with this in . In theory there should be a "Greenwich Mean Astronomical Time" in to specify this system, but I don't see it.

  14. @kobriendublin For a more concrete example that I think will help illustrate the point, Greg Swinehart's talk about shiny UI improvements focused more on {bslib} + , w/ brief mention of the related defaults in . He seemed embarrassed that 1 slide showed the Python version of something because it's not QUITE ready in R (but it will be very very very soon, he assured us). I feel like kast year it would've been all Py with a brief mention that maybe it'll be in bslib eventually.
