  1. J'aime Ansible

  3. Got this error with Ansible on my Mac:
    ERROR: No module named 'markupsafe'

    Found this: ansiblepilot.medium.com/ansibl

Solved it by (re)installing python-markupsafe: ansible; brew uninstall ansible python-markupsafe; brew install ansible python-markupsafe; ansible

    #ansible #homebrew #markupsafe

  4. Just a big shoutout to #Ansible and #AWX for being able to manage a AWX instance using Ansible.
The instance is running in #Kubernetes, managed by #ArgoCD. But the inner configuration of AWX (LDAP, Teams, Organisations, Permissions, Templates, Projects, Inventories, Credentials) needs to be managed, too. That is where Ansible comes in.

Next week I will once again have a AWX instance that manages itself by running a job on AWX. Nice, eh?

  5. Anyone with Ansible/AWX experience accessing HTTP APIs on protected networks?

I have tried documentation, the global web and chat with colleagues. Time to bring on the fedi human search.

Using ansible on switches that require you to come from a protected network is easy, you set up your ssh command to go through a jumphost. Accessing switches or firewalls that use an HTTP API is easy, you use a package that talks to the HTTP API, probably using the httpapi package.

But an HTTP API where you need to come from a protected network? Manually it's easy, just `ssh -D` to a jumphost/bastion in the right network and tell curl to use a SOCKS proxy.

On the Ansible side though, I can't find the right place to get httpapi to go through a SOCKS proxy, and I'm not sure where's the best place to run that ssh command.

Has anyone on Fedi already solved this problem?

  6. AWX: упрощаем работу с Ansible

  14. #ansible and #lvs question: in both real and virtual machines, /dev/sda,b,etc are not reliably defined - at least not in #rhel.
I have a vm image for cloning that, when need a second “disk” to make a second lvs/lvg out of... I can’t guarantee what device to hand to Ansible to make it out of.
This HAS to be a solved problem.

Has anyone reading this solved it or know someone who has?

  19. Ansible and YunoHost are kind of an iffy combination.

YunoHost is based on a "continuous integration" model. So each time you run it, it tries to get the most up-to-date versions of the software. Sometimes this fixes problems, but other times, things break. There isn't a clean "release" or "version" schedule to stick to.

Which is in conflict with the notion of "repeatable installation" that motivated using a configuration management system like Ansible. Which is really closer to what I feel like I need as a DIY-maintainer.

The continuous-integration approach requires a larger risk of unpredictable demand for IT work. Any upgrade can result in breakage that is hard to recover from.

YunoHost provides a through-the-web GUI approach to managing the configuration, which eases the ongoing burden of the work, but it obviously can't eliminate it -- and apps will occasionally break.

And for my needs, YunoHost doesn't cover all the configuration: I still need to get in and make changes to configuration files. Ansible is handy for doing that in a predictable way -- so long as the configuration files don't change much.

I'm not sure there's a solution for this, other than acknowledging that IT work is an ongoing project expense: either in my time, or in money, if I were to pay someone else to do it.

  20. Learning to optimize my Ansible role to automatically populate the .ssh/config file based on my inventory has been beneficial. Managing the file remotely was very slow. I am switching to using ansible.builtin.slurp, ansible.builtin.set_fact, and ansible.builtin.copy.

Result: On the localhost, the time decreased from 20 seconds to 13 seconds. On a remote host, my script previously took over 2 minutes; now it runs in just under 20 seconds!
