I'm presently working on research, on foot and on paper, into a slate quarry tramway tunnel in north Wales.

Very pleased that a simple magnetic compass and measuring wheel (lit by torch!) suvey of an old slate quarry tramway tunnel (yellow) turned out in pretty-much perfect alignment with the portals at each end. I didn't have knowledge of the 1889 map until after the survey.

Surveying these past days has taken me to a much-visited but little-studied tramway tunnel in a north Wales quarry site.
Built sometime after 1828, it may originally have been an open cut, but was then covered over to accommodate slate tipping overhead.
The tip has sat as a vast mass over this rudimentary archwork for over a century. It's still bearing up, but there are clear signs of pretty imminent failure beneath the apex of the tip.

This dewatered the increasingly-deep quarry pit, which eventually reached about 108m below local surface level.
The quarry ceased operation in 1970 and quickly flooded thereafter.
