  1. Encountered a situation today where the test plan was weak (IMHO) due to underlying assumption that everything is OK, and we just need to confirm that expectation.

Assume there are 2 defects, one related to the change and one unrelated. Would your test plan find any problems? If someone claims these 2 defects exist, how do you prove there isn't one?

If your test plan can't cover both of these questions, then your test plan is weak (IMHO).

  3. "A popular nasal decongestant doesn't actually relieve congestion, FDA advisers say"

Phenylephrine became the most popular OTC nasal #decongestant in the USA after 2006 law restricted availability of #pseudoephedrine. Advisers to the FDA concluded that #phenylephrine does not outperform a placebo.

  4. @mos_8502 A 30 year old hot take? 😃

I do recall those days. In the mid 1990s, I had built a couple Cyrix-based computers, and I was initially happy with their price/performance. I had a 5x86 80Mhz, and IIRC a 6x86 133+. At some point, I realized the sluggish #Cyrix floating point was holding it back with the next generation of games, so I switched to Intel for my next build.

Also, I had a decent job by then, so I didn't have to settle for a bottom-budget rig.

  5. I'm starting to see an annoying return of "do something, Democrats!"

    Do what exactly?

The Republican Party holds the House, the Senate, the White House, and SCOTUS.

You're mocking the Democratic Party for a resolution against Venezuela "War Powers" as merely symbolic. Welcome to reality. Symbolic gestures are one of the only tools with a rogue President and a Republican Party that won't impeach.

  6. Wild. I just found a 23+ year old time capsule on the Internet.

"New Intel Pentium III 1 GHz Laptop Computer w/14" TFT Display, 384 MB Memory, 20 GB Hard Drive, Rewritable CD ROM Drive, 56k Modem & 10/100 LAN. Durable & Affordable for under $1,800.00"

The Wayback Machine says this text hasn't changed since at least Jan 6, 2002.

  7. Overall, the Metronet fiber pricing feels dishonest to me. I wonder how many people sign up for this without reading the fine print. Below is the pricing for my location, which includes 3 scheduled price increases over the next 3 years.

    Monthly Price
    $39.95

This Monthly Price is an introductory rate

The rate will go to 49.95 on month 13, to 59.95 on month 25, and to 69.95 on month 37.

  8. Today, I visited #Twitter for the first time in a month or two. As per usual, I had a few new followers. I went to look at their likes but couldn't; I only now consciously realize likes were my reliable bot test. A normal person will have like clusters — 3 or more in a row with commonalities: topic, tone, media, same user, language, etc. The bot likes were random and often included garbage posts.

Is that why they removed likes? Prob not, but...

  9. Today's news is Google Chrome has been installing a 4 GB AI model on some people's computers without consent.

Fortunately, it wasn't installed on my daily driver, probably because I often don't have 4 GB free on this tiny drive. Insert Meme Head Tapping Guy

To prevent installation, go to chrome://flags and search for "optimization guide on device", change to Disabled.

  10. I had an eye exam a couple weeks ago. The optometrist recommended progressive bifocals this time. I'd known it was time for a while, so okay.

My employer's VSP plan only covers the basic lenses, ~$75. The lower distortion, anti-reflective coated Nikon lenses are ~$275. If I pick the Nikons, I pay the $200 difference out of pocket.

One thing the optician said is the longer I delay getting my first bifocals, the harder it will be to adjust to how they work. Is this true?

  11. This kind of problem was easily solvable 25 years ago in a typical Windows spreadsheet or word processing program by just opening 2 instances of the program. But apparently Microsoft Project is too precious to allow opening two instances of the program simultaneously.

  12. Apparently, there's no way to have two different #Microsoft Project 365 projects open in two separate, simultaneously-visible windows. You can open two files, but they are both open in the same window; you can alt-tab between them, but a web search confirms my experience that there's no way to get them into separate windows. The closest I found was tips on how to split the window with one project visible in each half. Complete garbage.

  13. I was thinking last night about how POTUS47's actions, especially tariffs, have been accelerating the US's decline in global importance. As a defense partner, a trade partner, a public health partner, the US has been a leader, but that era may be coming to an end. Expect the EU, China, and India to fill the vacuum.

I really don't know where this is going. It's a half-baked thought at this point and highly speculative.

  14. I just read someone's gripe that USA people assume the Internet is only USA when they say "Happy Thanksgiving", "Happy 4th of July", etc, and they should stop doing that.

    Uh, no.

Please feel invited to celebrate the special days on your calendar. I welcome your Boxing, Diwali, non-US Thanksgiving, non-US Labor, Bastille, Obon, Indigenous Persons, Carnivale, Anzac Day, Lunar New Year, etc. I'm happy to receive your well-intentioned greeting at any time.

  15. I'm seeing posts about a General Strike for tomorrow. A key element of this strike is to not spend any money tomorrow.

An ultimatum has two parts: 1. A request and 2. threat of consequences if request is not met. #2 is used to get other party to deliver #1.

The poster for the 3/15 strike misses both parts. 1. There's no request or expectations. 2. Since the strike is to be carried out regardless, it's not applying any pressure to anyone to change.

  16. Ha ha, some of y'all who are screeching about a coup, calling on me to leave my wife, children, and suburban home to join the violent uprising in protest couldn't be bothered to take 5 minutes to vote for Harris Walz. Some of you still can't admit what an idiot mistake that was.

You think violent demonstrations and a civil war is easier than voting?

Well, you made your choice and now I'm making mine.

  17. There are many issues with microblogging on topics that are controversial, uncertain, and on which I have unclear, contradictory, or nuanced opinions.

If you can't easily reduce your thoughts to 500 characters, should you just remain silent, or try your best & hope people will consider your writing in good faith?

Ah, good faith — there's the rub! How many will take what you write and form the most unfair interpretation of it, aka a strawman?

  18. After his passing, with nothing but memories to process what he'd said, I thought how during the first 15 years after I'd moved away from home, I lived within an hour's drive, & not once did he call to ask, "how about I come over & take you to lunch." Not even when came to the big city to get something.

Note to parents: you have no right to expect your kids to visit you in your old age if you never visited them in their 20s & 30s.

  19. One of the things my brain does (and I believe many of you can relate) is dig up unpleasant memories and thoughts at random times.

The one I'm dealing with today: in the last 2 weeks of my father's life, he let me know he was disappointed that I didn't visit him more. I was floored because I'd made a deliberate effort the last 3 years when he was sick to visit him often - what I thought was often given wife and I had a child and full-time jobs.

  20. CW: Neil Gaiman abuse

I started reading the Vulture article about Neil Gaiman abuse allegations, and I couldn't read past 20% before I had to stop. It's too much.

I remember thinking as I read about the invitation to take a bath, my immediate thought was, "I would never do that, might make her uncomfortable. Especially given the power dynamic, she might not feel comfortable saying no."

Then I realized, "Yeah, you wouldn't do that. That's because you're not a sex predator."

  21. One distinct difference between being a 20-something and 50-something is the perspective that 10 years is not that long of time.

I’d like to think I had a longer perspective when I was 20-something, compared to a typical 20-something, due to my interest in history and politics. Even in 1995, it was clear to me things were vastly improved over 1965. Things don’t change overnight, but they surely do with the passing decades.

  22. Several years ago, I coined the phrase "crossword puzzle word" to describe a word that I know the correct spelling and meaning of, but essentially only see it used in crossword puzzles. It may even be the case that crossword puzzles are the only reason I know of the word at all.

  24. When I was in my mid 20s, I developed a bit of a pretentious attitude about television. So much of it is mind rot, and I was above that. I was reading books.

And then over the next 15 years, my attitude about television changed. My life had become more complicated, more stressful, more challenging, and television at the end of the day was my escape.

  26. @ernie I've thought about this topic at least 15 years. Prior to 2010, I had conversations with 2 different attorneys that spilled over into the power of judges. Both gave me the "calling balls and strikes" theory in a condescending tone, implying that I, someone without a JD, couldn't understand this topic fully.

Having had years to ruminate on this topic, one response I wish I'd said was "then why is it that when the court splits, it's almost always on political lines?"

What I'm thinking is along the lines that the vector-processing components of GPUs have also been used to speed up non-graphic mathematics on large arrays.
