  1. We've known for years Phenylephrine is shit.

Pharmacists used to offer it to you by default here, and they looked at you like you were a drug dealer when you said, "I'd like pseudoephedrine please."

Yesterday I went masked to the chemist and the pharmacist didn't even ask which; he went straight for the proper stuff and I happily handed over my driver's licence. Even they know phenylephrine does nothing!

  2. Sigh. Finally, but sigh. So are we going to get another useless drug as a replacement, or are they going to stick pseudoephedrine back directly on shelves for consumers, or what?

  3. I read that #pseudoephedrine is bad for anyone who has had #Covid19. Can I find that research now…? Nope. I remember it was something to do with blood pressure, heart issues (?) and only to be used under strict medical care.

Anyone know which article it was? I do read a lot of Nature and bmj.

  6. With the recent discussion of #phenylephrine (which doesn't work as an oral decongestant) and #pseudoephedrine (which DOES work as an oral decongestant, but is kept behind the counter since it can be used to make meth), it's time to revisit a 2013 paper in the Annals of Improbable Research, describing how to make the difficult-to-obtain pseudoephedrine from methamphetamine, which can be obtained any time day or night at open-air retailers in most US cities:

  7. "A popular nasal decongestant doesn't actually relieve congestion, FDA advisers say"

Phenylephrine became the most popular OTC nasal #decongestant in the USA after 2006 law restricted availability of #pseudoephedrine. Advisers to the FDA concluded that #phenylephrine does not outperform a placebo.
