When Coronado arrived in 1540, the Tiguex population was at its peak with more than 20,000 people settled along 30 miles of the Rio Grande. Kuaua was at the north end of their province. First settled in the early 1300s and occupied through 1600, the pueblo spanned 6 acres and featured approximately 1,200 surface dwellings and storage rooms, 6 underground ceremonial kivas, and 3 rectangular plazas.
