  1. " We're building the world's first true AI-native hyperscaler. " - Nebius

What does that even mean, other than words that will impress your boss and open his purse.

Also, Nebius is a neocloud. All neoclouds are specifically made for AI. Sorry... I mean "AI-native".

Also also, Nebius is Yandex. Yes, -that- Yandex. Russian Yandex. While it's headquarters is now in Amsterdam, it's other offices are in Israel and the USA. Make of that what you will. And its newest data center is in that bastion of European data freedom ... Alabama.

  3. The Is Quietly Killing its Web Archive
Tens of thousands of documents on contamination, clean power, and Trump’s deletions are now scheduled to disappear December 31, 2026.
While the usability of the archive has historically been far from perfect—researchers often encountered dead links and frustratingly limited search capabilities—the archive has held a trove of tens of thousands of EPA documents dating back to the 1990s simply not available elsewhere.

Cons: The bots will slurp it up. Sauron's Gaze falls upon me and my computational toymaking.

  10. I've always been dubious of the idea that an AI bubble popping would a lot of stranded hardware. the neoclouds COULD use their older GPUs for lots of things that aren't frontier models, but I don't think they're nimble enough. Meanwhile, hyperscalers like Microsoft are busy doing just that to speed up database queries.

GPU acceleration isn't new; nor are GPU-accelerated databases but they've never been mainstream @andrewbrust notes. you need a second SQL engine or switch to an engine most people haven't heard of. Microsoft putting it right into the Fabric platform as a switch speeds up existing SQL queries with no editing required.

The really clever bit: you don't need the latest, most expensive GPUs to speed up your database so it can keep up with all the extra queries agents are throwing at it. you get faster queries and Microsoft gets more life out of older GPUs, Tino Tereshko tells me.

Not only are older GPUs not getting scrapped faster (a suggestion that was doing the rounds last year); so many teams at Microsoft who aren't working on frontier models have ideas to use them that there's internal competition, which may gate availability of database acceleration, according to Conor Cunningham (who covered the research behind this at Fabcon). There's definitely demand!

  12. Hey, I just got an email from Amazon saying they're auto-enrolling anything that does Kindle Unlimited into an AI garbage thing that creates an audiobook read by AI slop machines. I'd already unenrolled, but the auto-renew runs out early next month.

If you see an audiobook of NAMELESS, tell me.

If they try and do that shit to me, I will be immediately delisting the NAMELESS ebook from Amazon. Nothing I see now indicates that there's one that has appeared yet, but if one does I'll act immediately.

Fucking Amazon and their bullshit AI garbage, motherfucker....

  14. The mobilization that started after losing the 1st round of the elections is something I’d never seen before in Brazil and something I think none of us could have expected.

It gave me hope that not only we could turn things around but also that the left becomes more united in the future, because we’re definitely gonna need it.

If you’re not from Brazil and don’t really understand the effort that went behind the left finally dominating social media, this article (in English) gives a good overview imo

  21. Until now the CV on my website (a PDF) was created and maintained simply in Pages. But it kinda sucked to have to make changes in Pages, export to PDF, use PDF Squeezer on it, commit it to my website's repo... It didn't use the same fonts, different colors, and keeping it in sync was a hassle.

From now on the source of truth is a Markdown file in my website, which gets rendered as a page on my site, plus as a downloadable PDF. One Markdown file to maintain, in my website, free from Apple's document format.

All handled by Saga, my static site generator (and weasyprint for the actual PDF generation).

I should probably write up an article with website details, how everything works. It's getting more and more interesting!

    tech bro = Nazi

Hacker News commenters want to keep those who would protest their oppression busy with forced labor, "re-educate" them, exterminate those who refuse or who you consider worthless.

Justify it with "rationalism", only ever considering the economic aspect, never other aspects … like ethics or "doing things for fun".

  26. I added this update to my Eero/Ubiquiti post:

UPDATE, 2:32pm ET 10/26/26: The issue with Ubiquiti’s site was that its autocorrection of my address (adding “Township” after my town name) then made it reject my address. When I corrected that, Ubiquiti’s form changed my street’s suffix from “Ct.” to “CT,” which again failed to pass their validation. When I fixed that by hand, I was able to check out. I hope their web form validation isn’t a harbinger of their hardware quality.
