I think we can add #SlickWillie to the list of those whose excesses and transgressions were excused or ignored.Separate to that is the apparent paradox of individualism being easily able to destroy self-respect and enable disrespect of those we hold dear. DJT's repeated slurs against those American military killed in war being a high profile example.

@Remittancegirl There is some of this that we can agree on--definitely that last part!
And there are times I feel like there's some truth to the first as well, that there aren't enough of us that are pissed off enough--but it's a bit more complex than that. I think there are too many who AREN'T pissed off enough--not just the ones who are fascists or racists or some other basket of deplorables, but ones who still trust the system too much to think it could fail--HAS failed, just to have brought us this far; ones who are apathetic enough NOT TO CARE; ones who don't believe they have any capability to change anything, and think the best way to protect themselves & their families is to do their best to accommodate to whatever happens (this last are basically the ones @ZDL is referring to) THESE are the ones I think we can share legitimate ANGER at, and there are way too many of them--enough to keep us (barely) NOT WINNING ELECTIONS.
But they AREN'T a majority; not even close. I think a PLURALITY at least are PLENTY pissed off enough--they just haven't been able TO FIGURE OUT HOW to do anything, because they've spent their whole lives in a system where all they had to do--all they were ever TAUGHT that they had to do--was show up every couple years and vote. So they keep DOING that--not because they aren't pissed off enough, but because they can't understand WHY IT ISN'T WORKING; they think it just isn't working YET. These are still PART OF THE PROBLEM, but I think they're the ones we should be focusing on--first, to help them BREAK THROUGH the illusion that just voting is enough; second, to help them see other things they CAN do--which may vary, and MUST include more things than 'just' showing up at protests, which is important but also NOT ENOUGH. Things like local businesses refusing service to the #ICEtapo; like neighborhoods banding together to track them and film them. Coming up with these things IS HARD; we need to be HELPING each other with them--and by 'we,' I mean Americans. We'd love the help of you Canadians (and others) but we DO need to understand ITS NOT YOUR JOB, any more than its women's job to fix men, or Blacks' job to fix whites. Although returning to the moment to my Intelligence role, it IS important for Canadians, and Brits, and Australians, and Germans, and French to understand that EVERY SINGLE ONE of our democracies is under attack by the same fascist #BillionairesInsurgency...and for us Americans to understand when you're fully occupied with THAT, which IS your job.
Meanwhile, though, there's ANOTHER large group--which SHOULD be the plurality if not an outright majority, but isn't (which I think is what we're all legitimately angry about): the ones who ARE pissed off enough--many of us have been SINCE 2015 at least--and ARE doing more than just voting. And while we all see SOME of it through the news (like the things I've already mentioned), much of it just isn't going to be visible to us outside our own spheres. Some of it's too local to get that kind of attention, like universities and businesses educating their employees on what they can do, legally, to shield their customers on THEIR property from anybody without a judicial warrant; some of it is too esoteric--for example, the "military" a few high-profile metros are seeing on their streets are actually federalized NATIONAL GUARD...and while it's in the news that the Supreme Court has FINALLY told the fascists they can't do that, what DOESN'T make the headlines as often is how many Guardsmen ARE QUITTING because they joined to DEFEND their neighbors not OPPRESS them.
And some of it, frankly, needs NOT to be visible: the serving Infantry Division commander who's quietly had their formation ready for a couple years, to uphold their oath to DEFEND the Constitution against ALL enemies, and has carefully set a red line that, should the fascists cross it, will adequately make it clear that's what they're doing--not just being another group of armed thugs trying TO TOPPLE it (what I've called "the Turkish option). The Intelligence whistleblower who's quietly making sure that Democratic congressmen stay apprised of foreign involvement in pulling the strings, or that civil rights groups see the "annexes" to Project 2025 that lay out their "final solution" to America's "problems." The individual citizens quietly exercising their Second Amendment rights to keep & bear arms, in case they ever have to resist tyranny the way America's founders did.
The majority of Americans are reeling right now--but we're not down for the count.
Anyhow--heh--this is why I don't do this very often: this is already more time than I was planning to devote to what was, after all, originally a somewhat joking reply to you that, for the moment anyhow, AMERICA'S MILITARY are clear who the enemy is, and that their job is to PROTECT democracy--not to end it. Take that for what you will; this is going to need to be my last post on the subject, in no small measure so I can keep doing MY part!

Could it be the for-profit model, typically by major corporate owners with numerous conflicting interest before the government?
Taken together, that's a powerful incentive to avoid holding power to account while also skewing content to appease your advertisers.

I saw that Guardian post.
But American democracy is not "on the brink". It's gone. The foxes control all areas of the hen house. They are blatantly ignoring all the rules, have destroyed the Constitution's checks and are bringing in more foxes every day.
We are now in a fight to restore democracy (or at least get back to the more-democratic state before the MAGA oligarchy seized all three branches). Time to move to #GeneralStrikes

Those who wrote the #US #Constitution did not want there to be an standing army in peacetime, and therefor they added support for "A well regulated #Militia..." that could be called upon if we were attacked.
Note that they specified: a) "well regulated", b) "a militia" SINGULAR, & c) at that time a "militia" meant able-bodied men keeping their single-shot muskets in their home (which was also what they used to hunt deer).
It is right there in the plain text of the amendment, but the #GunLobby has us so hypnotized we no longer see it. 😠
