The most astonishing and destructive thing never to happen to London
"Imagine walking out of Camden Town tube station, turning north towards Camden Market and finding yourself facing a twelve-lane concrete motorway full of roaring traffic. This was the intended outcome of the 1960s Ringways plan to drive four giant circular roads through the capital"

Cities on the World’s Best List are Putting People First Not Cars
"London, Paris, and New York City — and they are all leaders in prioritising the, ahem, humble and beautiful bicycle...cities that are not only thriving economically and culturally, but are also setting the standard for creating living cities—places that prioritize livability, sustainability, accessible transit, and active transportation like cycling."

California's disaster of an ebike voucher program slips away unnoticed
"Despite demand for e-bike vouchers being so high that it crashed the website each time the state opened the lottery, the California Air Resources Board voted at their last meeting to end the statewide program it oversaw, rolling the remaining $17 million of the original $30 million allocated by the legislature into its “Clean Cars 4 All” Program."

@todd We've left the state and won't be buying season tickets next year for the first time ever. The lack of support from the city is frustrating but otherwise we probably would have kept the faith!

Leeds, England plans to ban all bikes from the city center
I don't fully understand this. My automatic reaction is, "Hmph! They should ban cars instead!"...but I think they may have already done, in which case my reaction is meh. The important work is done, the rest is details.
"Stricter measures could soon be implemented to prevent anyone from riding any kind of bike through a busy pedestrianised area"

Seems a good time to retoot MY handy safety tips to help you stay safe while walking or biking!
* Attend your local city council meetings and ask them to provide safe biking infrastructure
* Write letters to your Congressman opposing any road-widening projects they may be considering
* Participate in a bike bus to get kids to school without cars
* Join a Safer Streets For All or Vision Zero advocacy group to work to get dangerous vehicles off the streets -
Who Doesn’t Have a Car?
"We estimate that 36 percent of Americans over the age of 10 do not or cannot rely on a personal vehicle to meet their daily travel needs, including nearly 16 million (or 1 in 20) Americans of driving age who live in homes without any personal vehicles...The vast majority of public dollars spent on “surface” transportation are devoted to roads and highways meant for vehicle travel."

What could be done to create a safer, and more equitable cycling culture in London?
That's easy-peasy! Ban cars from more roads.
"London’s transport network still prioritises motor vehicles, with London consistently rated lower than other European cities for its amenability to cyclists...a £616 million pledge for walking and cycling in its 2025 spending review, it remains a significantly lower investment than was promised"

Insane Clown Posse joins cause to raise money after Newburgh girl's death
"Around the same time as ICP's share, the GoFundMe fielded a $500 donation credited to Joseph Bruce, the real name of group front man Violent J. An anonymous $500 donation came in the same day, and multiple smaller donations have poured in since.
"All set," one X comment reads. "Not much, but family is family."
"Rest in peace, little Juggalette," another says."

28% of Londoners say they are now more likely to cycle in future
"Electric hire bike provider Lime said its bikes' usage was up 74 per cent by the Wednesday of strike week, rising steadily through the first few days as more people turned to their e-bikes to get to work. Average trip duration and length were also up by more than a third...booming bike use has also turned the heads of some who did not use bikes that week."

Took the tube up to Harrow today. Quite nice, reminded me a bit of being back in the States. Wembley Park is a bit posh and Wembley High Road is all about cars, with a tiny bit of space left for a lot of pedestrians.

Call for ‘pay-as-you-go’ road levy sparks warning in Lords of divorce risk
“If, maybe in a marriage, someone can see where their other half has been going when they are not around, it could well cause a major rise in the divorce rate and other things.”
I would like to see some serious discussion of this issue rather than just making a joke out of it.

Meanwhile, the Spectator is all about the Limes.
"I’ve always thought that the Lime bike critics are really saying something else. Like ‘I’m unfit’, or ‘I’m a scaredy-cat’, or ‘I can’t ride a bike’, or ‘I don’t like teenagers’. You must be annoyed to know how easily I glide about the city, envious that I’m writing this just half an hour after leaving the office, the lunatic drivers under the Westway unable to slow my journey."

Lime bikes in London
The most worthwhile phrase of the article is the last one: "Perhaps e-bike injuries and pavement clutter are issues, but higher up the priority list are poor infrastructure, the number and size of cars, and air quality. 'Lime bike leg' is catchy, but not the whole reality of cycling in London."

@Lazarou I think just being able to live without owning a car makes a big difference.

The Happiest Cities in the World are Also the Most Bicycle Friendly
"What do all these cities have in common? They put people before cars. Their governments invest in policies that benefit everyone not just motor vehicle commuters, they invest in climate-friendly infrastructure, and safe, active transportation infrastructure. And that investment pays off"
You could also turn it around, and say cars make people unhappy.

Greenville doesn't look like much, but Indy's not looking any better, terrible passing everywhere. Maybe the field's been resurfaced or something. 0-0 at the half.

Parked Vehicles Significantly Intensify Urban Warming
"The research showed that in Lisbon, dark-coloured vehicles made the air around them 3.8°C hotter compared to the nearby asphalt road. This is because car parts, like thin metal surfaces, and dark paint soak up a lot of sunlight and heat up very quickly, which can create temporary “hotspots” that make it even hotter for people walking by...light-coloured cars did not add as much heat"

Deteriorating sidewalks in Indianapolis neighborhood spark community outcry
"The sidewalks along Nowland Avenue are in particularly poor shape, according to locals, who describe the scene as “really bad,” with many curbs missing and weeds growing uncontrollably."
The city's response is that "Repairs are addressed as funding becomes available" which I suspect means "Repairs are not addressed."

I need to sell my two Magnum e-bikes.
Magnum isn't listed at bicyclebluebook.com though - is there some comparable brand I could use to set a price? They're about five years old, in great shape.

Carfree Olympics threatened by lack of bikeshare near LAX
"We were told about the station’s great walkable and bikeable design, and how that would help LA host a carfree 2028 Olympics...Metro bike share is possible going away since they weren’t able to renew their contract with the city and has been taken over by another company. Not sure if said new company will continue using bikes or an alternative form of transportation."
