Calling all food-loving Norwegians! I would really like to know about Christmas #food traditions between Christmas and New Year, not the celebration days themselves. If you had a family/friends party at that time would it be more likely to be in the form of a sit down dinner or more like a help yourself hot/cold buffet table? Thanks lots in advance!

So I have aubergines, carrots, beetroot, turnips, fennel, leeks, a savoy cabbage, garlic, mint and dill all for £12. I will be pickling some of the fennel and the turnips (one of the beetroots will go in with the turnips to give the gorgeous, traditional pink colour) and making a smoky tomato & lentil dish with the aubergines, then topped with feta & baked. I am awaiting inspiration for the rest.

Right, I’m off to the market to buy seasonal veg & herbs to build my week’s menu around. First, however I have to locate my debit card in order to get actual cash out to pay for them! My phone will not work there. The pandemic definitely changed the way I pay for everything.

A little late and a little lumpy but still delicious Lammas Loaf, served with home made smoked mackerel paté and a lovely blue cheese.

Did you know that on St Peter’s Day (29 June) in Herefordshire it was believed that rain needed to fall on the orchards to ensure a bountiful apple harvest?

If you are looking for food ideas for a solstice celebration consider foods that reflect the nature of the day such as red & orange fruits which represent the fiery nature of the sun, green herbs to banish negativity & attract prosperity, delicious cheese (particularly round ones) for joy & health. If you want to attract a soupçon of passion then add some spices/chilli & maybe a touch of honey in the form of mead to attract money, love & blessings to your home.

Tonight I had my first taste of this season’s asparagus and it was glorious. I toasted it with ice cold cava and followed it up with excellent tapas whilst enjoying the new adaption of Agatha Christie’s ‘Why Didn’t the Ask Evans’. An excellent Friday night even if I already know why 😋
