  13. Highlights 30.03.-05.04.2026

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    # QUESTION OF YPJ INTEGRATION INTO SYRIAN ARMY

The position of YPJ is a key stumbling block in the integration process. Publicly made suggestions of what integration should look like from the STG side insist on it becoming part of a (women's) police force, instead of being collectively granted a place in the military which YPJ demands. On April 2nd a YPJ delegation discussed the topic in Damascus and said that the minister showed some openness and 'flexibility'. However what this means concretely is unclear. YPJ, which just celebrated their 14th anniversary, has been a cornerstone of the Rojava revolution and is not willing to dissolve nor to integrate individually.

    # TENSIONS IN JALABIYA

According to the agreements between the SDF and STG, important offices should be held by people from the areas they govern. With the appointment of a mayor by the STG, Kobane residents say this is not being applied. Officials from other regions are appointed without the promised consultation of Kobane residents. The people of the city where also violently prevented by STG security forces to express their dissent by way of a statement. This is another point of friction in the integration process. Thus, people took to the streets in protest, and were met with live fire, which they see as a breach of the January 29 agreement.

    # SECOND LARGER GROUP OF AFRIN RESIDENTS RETURN

Another convoy of 200 people who were displaced from Afrin now returned with about 145 vehicles from Hesekeh to their homes. As part of the January 29 agreement, STG overlooked the transit.

    # 4 CIVILIANS ABDUCTED FROM SEREKANIYE

Turkish military police abducted four civilians from occupied Serekaniye handing them over to Turkish secret service. Their whereabouts remain unclear.

    # PROTESTS DEMANDING TO KNOW ABOUT MISSING PEOPLE

Protests took place in Kobane and Qamishlo to demand more information about people still missing. With prisoner exchanges some detainees have returned home, while many families remain without information of their loved ones. There was also a protest in front of the UN in Geneva to demand information on the two journalists that went missing in Raqqa, now about two months ago.

    # FIRST STEPS FOR SYRIAN CITIZENSHIP FOR STATELESS KURDS

Following a January 16 decree, the Syrian Interim Government set up places where 'stateless' Kurds can go to register, as a first step to eventual citizenship in the Syrian state. This comes after decades of systematically removing or denying citizenship for Kurds living in Syria that started in the 1960s.

    # EXPLOSION IN HESEKEH, CHILDREN AMONG DEAD

An explosion in a shop in Hesekeh took the lives of six people including children. The origins and reasons for the explosions remain unclear.

    # TURKEY RENTS OUT KURDISH VILLAGES IN BAKUR AS TRAINING FACILITY TO MILITARY

Since the 'scorched earth' politics of 1990, Kurdish villages around Mount Sirnex had been emptied and people are prohibited from resettling or even stepping foot up to this day. Now it got known that since 2009, the Turkish state had been renting out those places to the military for 49 years. Besides the use for military training, those areas have been turned into extraction sites for timber, coal, and other raw material. Additionally, there are plans for a dam that would flood and thereby extinguish at least two villages. Among those is the village Sax which is registered a first grade archaeological site.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    # MONTHLY EVALUATION

On the ground in Rojava, not much has changed over March. The situation still seems fragile. The more the time goes, the more negotiations and agreements are falling short on their implementation, it becomes more clear that women liberation is the core of this revolution. It is something we already knew as it is often emphasized, but it is becoming very clear once again. As political and military lines are changing due to "integration", it is the women's movement that helps to remember where are the fault lines and main contradictions located. The discussions about YPJ are the most clear example of it.

For all those forces who those who try to impose their authority, the question of women's freedom, together with the proposal of all nations coexisting together with ethnic and cultural autonomy, is still a problem. It questions their legitimacy, it poses a danger to the program of the Syrian state, as well as to the ongoing regional projects of Israel, US and Turkey. It is a reminder about the real ongoing struggles and the eventuality of renewed war. The military structures of SDF, as well as the civilian bodies of the Autonomous Administration, continue their resistance, navigating the contradictions and conflicts as they come.

One thing is sure, the Syrian civil war is not over yet: there are constant militarized attacks on minorities, there is Assadist underground insurgency, there are powerful Arab tribes who won't accept external domination, there is Israeli intervention in the south, there are Druze who advocate for independence from Syria... And there are also entire battalions of religious fundamentalists, who after more than a decade fighting for an islamic state with al-Qaeda or ISIS, see now themselves integrated in the new Syrian army. Many of them are comfortable as they rise the ranks of state power, but others are disappointed to see the new Syrian government shaking hands with US, Russia and Israel. That is creating a perfect ground for ISIS, which is on the rise again .

Syria is far from any sort of resolution and peace, and on top of all that the new regional war, unleashed by the attacks of Israel and US against Iran, are making things even more complicated. Kurdish forces are trying to keep distance with this war, not just in Syria but also in Iran. Revolutionary forces are working to build up a political alliance with other forces opposed to the Islamic republic, mainly other Kurdish parties but not only. They are not rushing into the war, knowing from experience that war itself won't address the political and ideological struggle that is needed for a real transformation of society.

Still, iranian drones are not only exploding on US bases, but also on critical infrastructure all around middle east. Several locations on the Kurdish regions in Iraq are suffering attacks, including kurdish revolutionary territories close to the iranian border. KRG authorities don't have the capacity to stop iranian dornes, and even the house of Maseud Barzani has become a target for the Shahed drones.

Another sidetrack of this war is how it is serving as excuse for Turkey to stall the peace process started in Bakur. It gives them the perfect smoke cover to simply delay any steps for democratization, leaving the steps taken by the revolutionary movement made in this last year unanswered. Still, many kurds continue working tirelessly for such a peace process. In Öcalans recent message for Newroz, emphasis was put on action, on making the struggle practical. A key term coming up in this regard is the commune, thus efforts of grassroots decentralized self-organisation of society. But when it comes to the Turkish government, seems clear they prefer to wait, leaving doors open to consider what will be more beneficial for them based on the results of the war on Iran.

All this unfolding conflicts are forcing us more than ever to reflect what it means to be a revolutionary. Rojava created an example of what a stateless society can be, navigating a sea of local, regional and geopolitical conflicts with really high consequences. But nothing lasts forever and the situation is constantly changing, constantly evolving. Can we achieve victory through war as the dominant field of struggle? Perhaps the answer might not be the same everywhere. In Kurdistan, the Kurdish Liberation Movement has been fighting a war for over half a century. Currently this movement is taking steps to open their for political maneuvering, shifting away from armed struggle as the main strategy without losing their means of self-defense. Now, can this revolutionary society coexist with the Syrian state and wage this political struggle, can it stop the war? The answer to this is unfolding before our eyes, but the final result is yet to be seen.

    Revolutionary greetings 🖤

  18. Elisapie – Inuktitut (2023, Inuk)

Our next spotlight is on number 1086 on The List, submitted by @Yuki.

I’m not a covers person. Too often they come off to me as an artist just trying to prove their chops, saying ‘hey, check out what I can do with this song’, and I, more often than not, reply ‘I would prefer not to’. But this album, an entire album of covers from Inuk alt-folk artist Elisapie, comes off entirely differently. This isn’t a ‘look what I can do’ but a ‘these are how I heard these songs, where I lived and with the things happening in my life at the time’. Or even, given that every cover on this album has been translated and is sung in the artist’s own language (Inuktitut), ‘this is my story, told through these songs other people wrote’.

    From the Bandcamp description:

“It’s a covers album that sprouted in the artist’s mind…when songs by artists such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, Metallica, Queen, and Cyndi Lauper, whose music once took over the community radio airwaves throughout Nunavik, Northern Quebec, triggered a flood of tears. Many of these songs were an escape as the community and cultural references were being challenged by colonization. Elisapie began a mental archaeological process: finding songs associated with emotional memories and people from her past… Every song is linked to a loved one or an intimate story that has shaped the person Elisapie is today. Through this act of cultural reappropriation, she tells her story, offers these songs as a gift to her community, and makes her language and culture resonate beyond the Inuit territory.”

Below is a track list noting the originals.

    1. Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven – Metallica)
    2. Sinnatuumait (Dreams – Fleetwood Mac)
    3. Taimangalimaaq (Time After Time – Cyndi Lauper)

  25. CW: A Call for Solidarity from the Universities in Rojava/Northern and Eastern Syria

We, the faculty, students, and staff of the Universities in Rojava/Northern and Eastern Syria, send you this message as we leave our classrooms to help defend our universities, our cities, and our revolution alongside the self-defense forces. Before the autonomous administration, Raqqa (Sharq) and Kobanê had no universities. Our campuses, built in the midst of war, have reclaimed long-denied education to young people, grounding learning in women’s liberation, ecology, and a democratic, communal life for the people.

For the past fifteen years in Rojava/Northern and Eastern Syria, under constant pressure and repeated attacks by imperial, sub-imperial, and colonial powers, our people have built a shared life through collective capacity. Against capitalism and patriarchy, we have worked to advance a society rooted in women’s liberation, ecological life, and democratic self-rule. Under the conditions of war across the region, and against the violence and impositions of regional states and their mercenaries, we relied on our own self-defense and our own diplomacy to carve out space, and within that space, we struggled to build a life that once seemed impossible.

Today, that life is under attack. What we have built, this source of hope for oppressed peoples in the region and around the world, is being targeted from all sides by the fascist forces of the Syrian Arab Army, an al-Qaeda lineage rebranded into state authority and dressed in suits, and by mercenaries, backed by regional and global imperial powers.

We are living through an unfolding feminicide and genocide. The situation on the ground is urgent and worsening by the day. Our university buildings are full of displaced people trying to survive the winter without blankets or extra clothing. Turkish drones have targeted several places near the University of Rojava in Qamishlo during the last few days. Students in the dormitories in Qamishlo are cut off from their families in Kobanê, not knowing if their loved ones are safe, and unable to reach them.

The situation in Kobanê is particularly dire. The city is currently under siege, surrounded by Syrian Army forces on one side and the Turkish army on the other. For seven days, there has been no electricity, no access to water, and no reliable access to basic necessities. Under these conditions, learning, safety, and survival are being targeted as part of a coordinated siege.

We say this clearly to our friends, colleagues, and comrades: we will defend ourselves with everything we have. We will defend our people, our universities, and the possibility of the life we have struggled to build.

We call on you, wherever you are, to stand with Rojava. Raise your voice. Organize on your campuses, in your unions, and in your communities. Use your positions, however limited they may feel, to push for action, to demand accountability, and to refuse silence. Strengthen the networks of solidarity that make resistance possible. Stand up for the revolutionary aims of freedom, women’s liberation, ecological life, and democratic communal life. Your solidarity is part of our self-defense, and it can help shift the balance and prevent yet another genocide in the region.

Full scale war is here. We were caught up in the midst of it and did not manage to publish updates the past two days. We'll do our best to be back on track here to keep you updated, but also call on all of you to seek out the truth of what is happening on the ground. If you run into relevant things we did not mention, let us know and we'll do our best to verify and inform. Solidarity is our best weapon!

    # NES LOOSES GROUND

The past three days, the border between NES and the Syrian regions under STG control has been moving by the minute - to the loss of NES and gain of STG. Following a fragile ceasefire agreement that has not been respected, SDF had to withdraw from Raqqa as well as Deir ez-Zor region. US by its non-reaction gives green light.

Despite everything that is at stakes for all the people and the revolution, two major risks arising with this are for one the consequences for women.
Women in places like Raqqa, who were liberated from certain of the patriarchal and fascist constraints, are being and will be thrown back to full oppression with all the abuses we can picture. The second is the risk that prisons holding thousands of ISIS fighters captive being lost control over which would bolster an ISIS resurgence. At Raqqa Al Aqtaan prison, while SDF withdrew from the city, some SDF fighters stayed behind to defend the prison in order to prevent ISIS being liberated. They are besieged and water supplies being intentionally cut off. The situation is very fragile. Second, the prison in Shedadi had to be left behind by SDF, with US army watching idly from close distance. Consequently, STG went in and freed the prisoners. Third, Al-Hol camp, the refugee camp housing about 40.000 women and children and affiliates of ISIS fighters, cannot be controlled any longer by the SDF. SDF announced that due to the ongoing attacks they can't secure it any longer, shortly after US allegedly deployed some forces and stated that SDF is still in control of the facilities. Several days ago already, after Tabqa Church Prison was evacuated by SDF, STG-affiliated cells entered and opened fire, staging a scene as if taking control of the prison.

Kobani is an island on the map now, encircled by STG and Turkish state factions. STG intentionally cut off water and electricity from the city, putting the inhabitants at great risk.

    # MASS MOBILISATION

As last hopes for diplomatic and peaceful solutions are being crushed by Turkey-backed STG aggression, organisations and structures of NES, of other parts of Kurdistan, and internationally call for mass mobilisation in order to defend NES and the revolution. DAANES concludes: “We must understand that we are facing an existential war. To preserve the gains of our revolution and our identity, there is only one option, popular resistance.” In NES, even politicans and injured fighters take up arms.

In other parts of Kurdistan, people in Southern Turkey and Northern Iraq managed to break through the borders to come and join the resistance. Semalka border - the main entry and exit point for NES - allegedly opened doors, allowing many buses full of kurdish civilians going to join the resistance in Rojava. A protest of thousands in Nusaybin, which lies in Turkish territory just next to Qamishlo, culminated successfully in the tearing down of the border. Hundreds rushed across into NES, but Turkish soldiers opened fire against the protestors and at least four people were injured.

This mobilisation is also being echoed by people all around the world, taking to the streets to condemn the attacks. Many protests and demonstrations already took place in Turkey, France, Switzerland, US, Germany, Austria, Catalunya.

    # KURDISH UNITY AND PUSHES FOR ETHNIC DIVISION

In face of such grave attacks, different Kurdish organisations and politically differently affiliated populations can be seen moving closer together, recognising the threat to all of them. Talabani, president of PUK in Kurdistan-Iraq condemned the attacks, expresssing to side with NES. At the same time, the current situation sadly also fuels anti-Arab racism in NES, with Arabs sometimes being seen as one with what STG are representing. These ethnic divisions are precisely what Turkey and HTS are striving for and thriving on. In such times we need to remind ourselves and each other more than ever, that what is being defended in NES is a political liberatory effort that bridges among ethnic and national differences.

    --<--

Hier versagt jedoch westliches Regierungshandeln seit Jahren. Bekämpft endlich Fluchtursachen - nicht die Geflohenen! # NEWROZ PIROZ BE!

This week all Kurdistan went to the streets for Newroz, the new year celebrations for many peoples in West and Central Asia, Caucasus and Balkans. It has a very significant meaning of resistance for Kurdish people. Throughout northern Syria big celebrations were organized by the DAANES, with music, political speeches and other cultural events. Many political and social organizations made statements to celebrate Newroz and to celebrate the achievements of the Kurdish liberation movement, as well as the revolutionary steps taken this year, and the recent statement of Abdullah Öcalan invigorated the celebrations.

    # NEXT STEPS ON THE AGREEMENTS SIGNED BY ABDI-SHARA'A

Following the agreements of cooperation signed by Mazlum Abdi and Ahmed al-Shara'a, the provisional goverment formed a committee to coordinate its implementation. Alongside discussions about the integration of SDF into the Ministry of defense and other topics related to security and military affairs, steps are also been taken in civilian affairs. UNICEF mediated a discussion between the DAANES and the Ministry of Education to develop a fair and accessible process for students across the region, mainly concerning Syrian universities and mechanisms for conducting secondary and preparatory certificate exams. Discussions about oil and gas fields and electricity plants are also taking place, with the Syrian Minister of Electricity Omar Shaqrouq giving at a press conference about energy infrastructure repairs in northeast Syria. Rumors and alleged conditions of SDF and the transitional government about the integration of SDF in the new Syrian army are spreading on some social networks, but as terms are being discussed no official announcements have been made this week.

    # AGREEMENTS BETWEEN PYD AND ENKS

Representants of PYD (Partiya Yekitiya Democratic - Democratic Union Party, leading political party of DAANES) and ENKS (Kurdish national union party, a party in Rojava that is closely connected to KRG and Turkey) held a meeting in Qamishlo with mediation of Mazlum Abdi and American officials. After the meeting both sides communicated they reached agreements to end the disputes between both organizations and to build a common delegation to negotiate with the Damascus provisional government. Both parties also expressed their common disagreement with the provisional consitution that was recently proposed by the provisional government, calling for a decentralized and federal Syria. They also stated that they will meet again after the celebrations of Newroz to continue negotiations.

    #COASTAL INSURGENCE

Incidents continue in the coastal areas of the Latakia province that saw the recent wave of insurgency. Revenge killings and kidnappings have continued over the past week, even as coordinated insurgent attacks and extrajudicial sectarian killings by interim government forces have decreased. Alawite media have widely reported on instances of violence committed against the Alawite community by Sunnis and government forces. Several thousands, mostly Alawites, left their homes seeking shelter from the attacks in Lebanon. Near 10.000 found temporary shelter in the Russian base at Hmeimim, but after the tensions lowered, Russian military personal urged them to leave the military base.

    # CLASHES IN LEBANESE BORDER

After a confusing incident on the border between Syria and Lebanon where some Syrians were killed, clashes took place. Forces of HTS connected to the Syrian Ministry of Defense (MoD) launched a raid into Lebanese territory, taking control of one small border town. The Lebanese army engaged in clashes, allegedly against smugglers or tribal armed groups. HTS-linked media blame Hezbollah for the incidents, but Hezbollah denied involvment. Over the week, clashes continued on and off, with discussions ongoing between Lebanese goverment and Syrian provisional government to secure the border and stop the clashes. Allegedly, Hezbollah used the tensions and confusion to launch raids on Syrian territory.

    # DEIR EZZOR INSURGENCY

Soldiers of the MoD launched several raids in the Deir Ezzor region, in areas under control of the provisional government. The raids followed a wave of insurgency and attacks against military points of the MoD, allegedly by smuggling networks and militias aligned with Hezbollah or with Iran. It seems there is no direct relation between the insurgency in Deir Ezzor and the insurgency in coastal areas, but in both cases Assad loyalist elements seem to be involved in one way or another.

    # HALT ON TURKISH ATTACKS?

On Sunday 16th of March a Turkish drone attacked a family home in the Kobane countryside killing both parents and 7 children, with only two children surviving with serious injuries. Many protests denouncing the attack took place all across north-east Syria. Two days after the massacre, the attacks of SNA and the Turkish army slowed down to a point that in the last days, no new attacks are reported. This pause could be a temporary phenomenon, but it comes against the backdrop of the SDF-Syrian provisional government talks. Turkey and the SNA appeared to halt attacks on March 19, which was the same day that the Syrian interim government met with the SDF at al Shaddadi base in Hasakah Province to continue negotiations over the SDF’s integration into the Syrian army.

    # ISRAEL ATTACKS

Israel continued its attacks on Syrian military positions, further advancing their occupation in southern Syria. Some airstrikes are claimed to be targeting military installations in southern Syria, which were allegedly being repurposed by military personal, and becoming a potential threat to Israel. Military occupation forces entered several new villages of the Quneitra region. Besides the expansion of the military occupation, they launched airstrikes next to the Lebanese border, allegedly targeting Hezbollah militias. The Israeli air force also bombed the Palmyra military airport in central Syria in several raids.

    # Evaluation

First of all, we want to share a self-criticism for not sharing our weekly update last week. We included some relevant events from past week in the present update. A combination of technical difficulties, shortcomings in coordination and other relevant works prevented us from curating a coherent update to share last week. We consider this task an important work to do. We value the trust you give us by following our channels, and we want to keep up with the commitments we agreed. Nevertheless, we are not professional journalists or analysts, and have limited capacities and resources. We are revolutionary anarchist militants keeping up with the duties we committed to: support, defend and expand the revolutionary developments achieved in northeastern Syria.

About the situation on the ground, as the recent escalation in Latakia region unfolds, the military forces of the transitional government are reacting as everyone expected them to do. The Salafist elements of HTS together with other Islamist militias of SNA are massacring Alawite people and inciting ethnic hate and revenge. Al-Sharaa's measured declarations to simulate control of the situation are just a performance. Nevertheless, his recent statements about conspiracies and plans to sow discord and instability in Syria, may have some foundations besides just diverting public attention. Russian elements have been negotiating with the transitional government, but they probably kept connections with what remains of the military of the ousted regime. The scale and coordination of the attacks may suggest some external support for the insurgents. The fast reaction of Russian army providing aid and humanitarian support to displaced Alawites is an indicator that they have clear interest to keep presence in the region, working to gain support from the local population. How much are they offering a solution to the problem they themselves created is a matter of speculation for now.

In any case, this escalation of tensions can lead to clashes even in other regions. Different forces in opposition the new government might find an opportunity to challenge their rule, pushing back to gain better positions in these moments of chaos. Also other Islamist groups may use this situation to incite hate and push for further escalation to advance their agendas. As we write these lines, we are following reports on attacks being repelled by security forces in Sheikh Maqsoud, the Kurdish neighborhood in the city of Aleppo.

In the geopolitical board, the "power vacuum" of Syria is clearly unleashing waves that will influence the region for decades to come. Turkey in the north and Israel in the south are trying to use this situation to expand their influence, entering in a race for hegemony in Middle east that is now being played in Syria. This creates and interesting contradiction for US, since Turkey being a NATO member will oblige them to defend Turkish forces in case of conflict with Israel. But we all know that in such a conflict US will align with Israel and not with Turkey, questioning the value of the whole NATO alliance. Such a situation still far away from taking place, but it is probably what Russia would like to see, and their presence in Syria is not over yet. How all those things will play out, especially now with a narcissitic clown in the White house, is still unknown.

But going back to the ground level, while those terrible massacres are happening on the Syrian coast and another escalation of Syrian civil war is looming over us, the celebrations of 8 of March brought the women of northeastern Syria out to the streets from Heseke to Raqqa, From Qamishlo to Deir Ezzor. Women's Protection Units (YPJ) held a military ceremony and reaffirmed its resolve to build democratic Syria with the commitment to the principle of "Woman, Life, Freedom". Women, the leading force behind revolution of northeastern Syria, are and will be in the forefront of unfolding events in Syria and elsewhere - including the resistance of Tishreen dam which, as we speak, holds strong and doesn't let Turkish army and their proxies pass to the other shore of the Euphrates.

    Revolutionary greetings! 🖤
