We have found the GNOME interface kludge and confused in the past. Having said that, what bothers us more is how #GNOME and KDE interface with the community.

GNOME forces #Google to #collaborate / contact, and #KDE forces CloudFlare. Its so very repellent. Not to sound conspiratorial but sometimes we wonder if that is the point. Repel those who really do want FOSS to outperform and thrive. Universities with ties to bad "financiers", etc.

  10. Wow I thought I was not affected by the PyYAML uncapped Cython disaster github.com/yaml/pyyaml/issues/ but it turns out I can't install `docker-compose`.

I often refer to @henryiii blog post on the matter iscinumpy.dev/post/bound-versi but I think in this case it was a big mistake not to cap Cython. In the end, build dependencies are throwaway dependencies, they are used in a temporary, isolated environment and then never used again.

  16. Altair 5.0 is out! 🎉

Vega-Altair (Altair for short) is a statistical visualization library for Python built on top of the Vega-Lite declarative grammar.

This version introduces selection parameters and variable parameters, experimental support for the DataFrame Interchange Protocol (hence compatibility with Polars!), and much more.

You can install it with `pip install "altair==5.0.0"`

And read the complete release notes at github.com/altair-viz/altair/r

    #python #dataviz #pydata #altair #vegalite

There, I said it. I'm actively avoiding it in all my projects, and I'm sad it's the default option on Gitpod.

  21. At the same time, reporting issues upstream is the only way for the developers to notice these things (I highly doubt stuff like this can be seen in the telemetry, and also remember that I'm using VSCodium).

How do folks cope with this?
