Deivos is probably not the band you think of first when it comes to the vibrant Polish death metal scene. Vader? Sure. Behemoth?? Of course! Decapitated?! Absolutely–Winds of Creation is one of the best death metal debuts on record. I was surprised, then, to discover that Deivos has also stalked the scene for over 25 years, starting in 1997–and that Apophenia is the band’s seventh album since debuting Emanation from Below in 2006. Deivos is not a stranger to AMG, however. The mighty and missed Kronos reviewed their 2015 release, Theodicy, with little to say about any positive aspect of the album. Amply warned, and with six previous efforts from which to draw comparisons, I dove into Deivos’ catalog to see if Apophenia signaled a sign of evolution.
Deivos plays a form of death metal rife with rote brutality, which might explain their tenured anonymity. Tomasz Kołcoń’s and Piotr Bajus’ combined guitar assault, which drinks from the fount of headless brethren Decapitated, provides the requisite palm-muted chugs, infernally speedy riffs, frenetic soloing and squeaky pinch harmonics to warrant Deivos’ genre tag. Hubert Banach’s brutally gruff growls channel his inner Corpsegrinder effectively, while Stadnicki’s bass lurks beneath, surfacing with Obscura-like, low-end melodicism. Both complement the capable drum work of Krzysztof Saran, who blasts, bashes, and crashes his way through the nine tracks. While Apophenia doesn’t push the envelope or test any boundaries, there are some interesting glimmers within.
Deivos differentiate themselves by employing a sonic anomaly—the cowbell. No genre staple, this quirky bit of percussion features prominently on “Maelstrom of Decay” yet never disappears entirely, popping up here (“My Sacrifice”) and there (“Revelations,” “Persecutor”) throughout Apophenia. It’s an endearing aspect of the Deivos sound. The guitar work on opener “Feretory” sounds like an inverted take on Brodequin’s main riff from “Diabolical Edict” and makes for a compelling listen. At the same time, the bendy riff work, echoey solos, and background synths give “Sermon of Hypocrisy” a Morbid Angel feel. All things coalesce on the title track, “Apophenia,” with its sludgy, crunchy mid-section brutally bookended by pounding riffs, crushing drums, bestial vocals and two of the album’s better solos, which shred-fully shepherd the track through its pace changes.
If death metal was made of moist dough, Deivos would be the tool that cuts the cookies. Their career-encompassing aversion to adaptation and strict adherence to formula casts an “All-these-albums-sound-the-same” shadow on the catalog. Long-form songwriting is not where Deivos shines, but even when honing compositions within their three-to-five-minute wheelhouse, Deivos struggles to provide satisfying song arcs. Lackluster solos that feel tacked on (“My Sacrifice,” “De Materia Turpi”) or do nothing to move the song forward (“The Great Day of His Wrath”) further frustrate. Writing solid finishes is also something Deivos wrestles with. Tracks with abrupt endings conjure strong ‘this-seems-unresolved’ feelings (“Maelstrom of Decay,” “My Sacrifice”). At the same time, several tracks lean on the dreaded ambiently industrial outro to bring resolution (“De Materia Turpi,” “The Great Day of His Wrath,” “Persecutor”). These outros are my biggest nit to pick, not only because they take up two of the scant thirty-three minutes of the album but because they murder much of Apophenia’s momentum in the process.
Diehard Deivos fans may crown Apophenia as the band’s masterwork, and they might even be correct based on everything I’ve listened to. Deivos has certainly upped their game on Apophenia, even incorporating Lewandowski’s fantastic Angel of Death III painting as the cover art. Ironically, this decision aesthetically fits those pesky outros more than the band’s music, which still delivers a tight, brutally performed death metal package, rote as it may be. While I probably won’t return to it after I’m done here, I appreciated my time with Apophenia. I certainly enjoyed this more than Kronos did Theodicy. Two things I’d impart to Deivos: drop the superfluous industrial ambiance and, per the wise words of Christopher Walken, “I gotta have MOAR cowbell, baby!”

Oxygen Destroyer – Guardian of the Universe Review
By Holdeneye
Nearly three years ago, I dropped a Very Good score on Sinister Monstrosities Spawned by the Unfathomable Ignorance of Humankind, the sophomore record from Seattle’s Kaiju-themed death/thrash purveyors, Oxygen Destroyer. The earnestness with which band leader Lord Kaiju and his party of massive-monster minstrels weave their tales of gargantuan creatures into their furious metal through the use of film samples and sound effects lends their no-nonsense music a certain nerdtastic charm, and that album earned an Honorable Mention spot on my 2021 year-end list. I’ll admit that when I heard the band was releasing a follow-up this year, I wasn’t initially super hyped about it. I felt like I already had Oxygen Destroyer figured out and could anticipate what Guardian of the Universe was going to sound like. I was wrong.
No, Oxygen Destroyer hasn’t gone through some huge sonic revolution; they’re still a death/thrash monstrosity. But I wasn’t expecting the jump in quality that Guardian of the Universe represents for the band. These guys were a tight, well-oiled machine before, but this album finds the band playing on a whole new level. Single “Shadow of Evil” demonstrates Oxygen Destroyer’s expanded ruthlessness by beginning with a deranged procession of savage riffs and ending with a volley of Lord Kaiju’s venomous shrieks. The song is a surgical strike, and it has utterly demolished my defenses.
While comparisons like Morbid Saint and Vader certainly still apply to Oxygen Destroyer, it feels like the band dialed up the thrash quotient of their sound this time around. I hear a lot of Kreator, Demolition Hammer, and even some frenetic Rust in Piece-era Megadeth riffing (see the opening title track) throughout much of Guardian of the Universe. As a huge fan of the thrash groove, this subtle shift elevates Oxygen Destroyer’s sound into the S-tier, giving their relentless assault a bit more breathing room and tension-building contrast. Because of this, the record has an incredible sense of momentum that won’t release its grip on you until the final note.
Guardian of the Universe is a cohesive listening experience, so much so, that it can be hard to highlight individual songs as standouts. Fortunately, at 33 minutes long, picking out highlights is mostly unnecessary; just listen to the whole thing, damn it! Fine, if you must sample the record first, try “Shadow of Evil,” “Eradicating the Symbiotic Hive Mind Entity from Beyond the Void,” or “Banishing the Iris of Sempiternal Tenebrosity.” You’ll see that Lord Kaiju sounds extra pissed in his current incarnation, and he and the rest of the instrumentalists absolutely slay their performances. The worming riffage, in particular, is simply stellar. The production gives ample space for the unhinged cacophony that is Oxygen Destroyer’s sound to reveal all of its intricacies, and the sonic aesthetic makes it feel like a classic record from thrash’s heyday.
With Guardian of the Universe, Oxygen Destroyer convincingly established a foothold within the highest echelon of modern thrash bands. Alongside acts like Enforced and High Command, these guys are proving that groovy thrash metal is alive and still hardcore kicking in the pit. While most run in fear at the sight of giant monsters, I, for one, welcome our new overlord. All hail Oxygen Destroyer, Kaiju of Thrash!

Disloyal – Divine Miasmata Review
By Iceberg
Polish death metal quintet Disloyal have been active since the late ‘90s yet have managed to escape the searing Angry Metal Eye up until now. This may have something to do with their genre of choice; black and post-metal are the Polish flavors of choice ‘round these parts. Or it could have to do with the looming shadows of their illustrious countrymen: Vader, Decapitated, Hate, and the increasingly out-of-place elephant in the room, Behemoth. Whatever the reason, I aim to rectify our oversight and give Disloyal their well-deserved moment in the charnel house spotlight. The band promise to deal in authentic Polish Death Metal, but peppered words like “catchy,” “atmospheric,” and “groovy” into their promo language, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect at the onset of Divine Miasmata. Pulling back the curtain on the eponymous album opener, would I find a hulking specter of the past starved for sustenance, or another carrion eater picking at the bones of giants long departed?
It’s clear from the outset that Disloyal know what kind of death metal to throw at you, the unsuspecting listener. After a surprisingly effective cinematic introduction—it’s rare that these tracks don’t feel shoehorned—you should expect to find explosions of teeth-baring tremolo and running-off-the-rails blasting, sewn together in a rough, patchwork fashion so the listener is kept on the edge of their seat. The album weaves a blasphemous, anti-religious theme, and the inclusion of spoken word and choral chants (“Divine Miasmata,” “Betrayed Faith”) and a musty, cavernous production greatly help set Divine Miasmata’s scene. Konstantin Kolesnikov utilizes a deep, rumbling roar that’s a bit one-note, but comfortably idiosyncratic, and the leads—they’re generally too short to be called solos—by main songwriter Artyom Serdyuk are impressive, pushing the bounds of tonality with leaping, highly chromatic figurations. All the performances here are professionally executed, and combined with the midnight-in-the-graveyard production Divine Miasmata leaves a strong impression, indicative of a band confident in their vision and voice.
Disloyal retain all the character of the brutal Pol-death pantheon while decorating the edges with sounds both modern and foreign. While you’ll find the traditional machine gun blasts and chuggy lines in cuts like “The Black Pope” and “Stella Peccatorum,” Disloyal stand ready with new weapons hidden up their sleeve. There’s dissodeath style harmonies and atonal, jagged figures in the guitars (“Silent Revolution”), hairpin tempo/meter shifts with little care for transitions (“Betrayed Faith”), mathcore odd time figures (“Ravens of Starvation”), and a couple outro riffs ripped from the pages of American groove metal (“The Black Pope,” “1347-1352”). All of these musical diversions should sound a jumbled mess, but the band wisely limits the number of riffs per song, extracting every once of venom and steel from each passage before moving to the next. The final product is a proudly Polish death metal record with prog and groove flourishes, paying homage to their predecessors while blazing new paths forward.
The band make a strong statement for their style, but there are still areas that could use tightening. Some of the best moments on the album end up feeling like afterthoughts when they should be highlights. The riffs ending “The Black Pope,” and “1347-1352” are neck-snappers, but they stand out awkwardly when used as a fadeout. There are two passages where the tempo and chromaticism relent and the music breathes—in the choral section of “Betrayed Faith” and the excellent denouement of closer “The Ascension of Abaddon”—but amongst the 50-minute runtime I’m disappointed there weren’t more asides like this to break up the chaos. And speaking of runtime, while I mentioned the band judiciously handles the number of riffs in their songs, some of these patterns run just past their natural finish line (see the ends of “Stella Peccatorum” and “Betrayed Faith”).
I’m happy to report that Disloyal have quietly released a quality death metal record that punches well above its weight. It takes some time to get used to the cramped production and the unrelenting nature of the lengthy, seamless compositions, but once you accept the invitation, Divine Miasmata has a world of thinking man’s brutality in store for you. Anyone yearning for the good ol’ days of Decapitated and Behemoth should give their lesser-known countrymen a spin, and fans of the proggier, blackened side of metal should pop in here as well. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the next record from these gents, and will gladly press play on Divine Miasmata the next time I need a blasphemous tongue-lashing.
