  6. While I am really enjoying Mastodon and will continue using it for connecting with kindred spirits and conversations, I will NOT be switching away from Twitter. I've written up a blog post explaining why: debbieohi.com/2022/11/mastodon #LearningMastodon

  12. Gentle reminder to Mastodon newcomers: be aware that communities existed here BEFORE the Twitter migration. Quote from a Mastodon longtimer (for original, look up "Mastodon Home Invasion"):

"[Twitter users] been taught to behave in certain ways. To chase likes and retweets/boosts. To promote themselves. To perform. All of that sort of thing is anathema to most of the people who were on Mastodon a week ago. It was part of the reason many moved to Mastodon in the first place. "

  13. Question for tech-savvy Mastodon gurus out there: In theory, can a Mastodon Instance be hosted on someone's laptop? I have NO intention of doing so myself, of course, but am curious. If the answer is YES, then it's one more reason for new sign-ups to do some research before picking an Instance to settle into (e.g. if the individual hosting the Instance is not backing up info and the laptop breaks down/is stolen etc.)

    Thanks for any insights!

  14. Thanks to those who answered my Qs about hashtags & searching, esp @mntle @stonebear & @mojomoomoo.

CONFIRMED: Neither hashtags nor searches are global. Searches are Local, but will search all posts that your Instance has seen incoming from other servers. If a post is boosted on another server, then post is searchable on that instance also. NOT ALL SERVERS RECEIVE ALL POSTS. "It would make running a server near impossible for a small use, due to the drive space requirements."

  15. A question for @stonebear and other Mastodon tech gurus: I've been told by several of my kidlit friends that Mastodon hashtags searches ARE global. If I misspoke in my blog post, I would be more than happy to post a correction (esp if I could include a supporting source).

Could someone out there please explain (in layman's terms) how Mastodon hashtag searches work, in terms of searching across multiple instances? Thanks so much!

  16. I've heard privately from a number of Mastodon users and here's my newbie take: Mastodon was originally created for those who did not feel welcome on mainstream social networks. Emphasis is on community, NOT outreach and discoverability. Many of the features Twitter users may miss (quote tweet, global search etc) were purposely NOT included to help protect these marginalized communities.

Also, I don't blame some Fediverse longtimers from resenting influx of new users. #LearningMastodon cont'd
