One of the best clips from the 1949 movie “Battleground” about U.S. troops fighting Nazis during the Battle of the Bulge in December, 1944. The message is a strong one; unfortunately, it’s as relevant as ever.

It was the song that played for the end credits of the 1978 film “Coming Home” starring Jane Fonda and Jon Voight. Ironically enough, these days I don’t think those two could be in the same room let alone make a film together.

Was a 1967 album cut that for some reason, wasn’t released as a single then. Someone wisely decided to release it as a single in ‘70 and went to the top of the Billboard charts in the U.S. Because it’s just that good. There’s your useless rock trivia for the evening. This particular mix is just a wee bit longer than the original.

Such a great album. Not many songs that don’t suck. Unless, of course, you’re not a McCartney fan.

A tune the high school band I was a roadie for back in the day would usually open concerts with.

I’m kinda curious to know if given the current state of affairs between the U.S. and Canada (thanks, FOTUS, you silly, really stupid bastard) if the Canadian band Triumph, said to be preparing for a new tour, will include this tune in the set list.

So there I was at the end of my sophomore year in high school (1980) cruising in a beat up 1968 Opel Kadett hatchback with a guy who had been the leader of a high school rock band I’d done some roadie work for and he pops in a cassette of Van Halen’s new release and asks “Jopek, have ya heard this yet?” I hadn’t but I liked it. A lot. I’m sure the neighbors will now. 😉

That time, or one of em, when Ian Anderson felt the need to make a statement. Maybe some of it is appropriate for the current wave of bullshit day in and day out.

One of the tunes my daughter included in a three CD set she put together titled “Dad’s Jams,” consisting of tuneage I’d play in the truck (and ‘85 Buick LeSabre Custom we had at the time) when the kids were little and I’d drop em off for school.

One of the things I’ll always love about my upbringing is my folks provided exposure to different types of music; while they didn’t always particularly care for the rock and roll I’d end up listening to, I wasn’t prevented by them to do so. That said, the evening’s “live” selection on deck, one of those classic album cuts from Christie Hynde and the Pretenders, here with Dave Grohl from a couple years ago at Glastonbury.

On deck on a beautiful Saturday evening digging into some of the CDs I have “inherited” from my mother who’s been sorting through my late father’s things as preparations continue to sell the house the folks bought in July of 1972 (where I spent my “formative years”) and my mom, at a spry nearly 89 years old, is on a list for senior living. End of life shit sucks. Still, can’t really go wrong with Franz Josef Haydn.
