There I was one day as a high school toward the end of the 1980 school year cruising around in a ‘65 Opel Kadet with John “Reeker” Reeves (rhythm guitarist for the aforementioned high school band “White Rock”) and he throws “Women And Children First” in the cassette deck. That little Opel’s stereo kicked some ass!

This one’s always kinda stuck with me as it was a tune I was playing on the radio one night in 1984 at the infamous 100,000 watt flamethrower known then as KPNY in Alliance, Nebraska when a nice lady called and asked if I wanted to participate in an orgy happening in Angora, Nebraska, about 30 minutes away. I thanked her and told her “No, thank you.” That was some interesting shit. 😉

The first time I heard this tune was when I first saw the flick “Valley Girl” in the 1983 time frame and it also introduced me to the music of Canadian Pat Travers who ended up on my playlists at my first radio gig in ‘84.

#JourneymanSatisfied but lost in love
Situations change
You're never who you used to think you are
How strangeThat's when she said she was
Pretending
Like she knew the plan
That's when I knew she was Pretending
Pretending to understand -
This tune is 40 this year and another that seems to preview the goings on in the world today as it did then.

#WalkaboutFor some a walk, to some a dance
It's just a form of motion one and all
Without dispute the least aware
Will no doubt see the ragings of a fool
First we look then we spy
The man who has a vision wants it all
A sin so clean rule supreme
The power to undermine
It doesn't mean much now
It's Built For The Future -
The evening’s “live” selection on deck; I love the reaction of the crowd. Audiences overseas just seem to be more into good tuneage and they have this one down.

#TheAlarmSomeone write me a letter
I need to know that I'm still alive
Someone give me a telephone call
I need to hear a human sound
Someone open up a door
And let me out of this place
I've been caged up for, oh, so long
I don't know if I'm living or dying -
Yes on the mind this evening on deck; loons kickin in on the lake across the way.

#BigGeneratorSo you want to get over me
And that's how you feel
Everything you want to be
Seems so unreal
I want to be all of you
And that's the confusion
It's so hard for me
To draw a conclusion -
Gonna play some VanHagar out here. Fuck it. I think the critters like it. Miss ya, Eddie.

Mark Knopfler had the Shakespeare tale in mind when writing this but I discovered today he also was writing about a relationship he once had with a young lady in the years before Dire Straits hit the big time.

Another favorite from REM; their early material was really quite good, in this former radio disc jockey’s humble opinion anyway. 😉

Out on deck for “Cover Saturday” and one helluva nice job by members of the Gin Blossoms, Toad The Wet Sprocket and Vertical Horizon on one of personal favorite REM tunes that was in my regular rotation at my first radio gig out yonder in western Nebraska when it was released in 1985. I want that Iron Maiden tee but mine won’t be sleeveless. 😁

I’ve loved this song from the first time I ever heard it nearly 46 years ago when “Making Movies” was released; saw the video for the first time in the fall of 1980 on “Nightflight.” I learned today the “roller girl” in the video, Jayzik Azikiwe, died on 31 January, 2008. I also learned in doing some reading on her career she was the daughter of Nigeria’s first president. Rest easy, Jay. This one on deck today is for you.

It’s a meh type of day here weatherwise, all cloudy and rainy and shit with the season’s first big snowstorm supposedly getting ready to dump a shit ton of snow and for whatever reason as I write and edit, this little gem popped in the noggen. Some Thursday afternoon deck time to unwind a little bit and charge the batteries before covering a town board meeting for the newspaper a little later; may as well rock, I reckon. I was 18 when I first heard this tune some 42 years ago. Love the guitar riff.

These days, Foreigner founder Mick Jones is 80 and dealing with Parkinson’s and Lou Gramm is 75 with health issues of his own (but still performing) but about this time 37 years ago they were still kickin ass together; they had a hit off this album with “Say You Will” but this one’s a good, steady Foreigner album rocker.
