Strangely hanabiramochi (葩餅), typically eaten during the first tea ceremony of the year (初釜), has a loose connection to the ayu.
The sweet is made from a circle of white mochi folded over sweet bean paste. At its heart a gentle pink colour glows, fading out to pure white at the edges.

The hanabiramochi is filled with symbolism for this important time of year.
The reddish pink is not only a celebratory colour, but hints at ume blossoms (梅) and their associations with renewal. The burdock, representing ayu (アユ/鮎 'sweetfish'), is a wish for long life.#Kyoto #京都 #hatsugama #初釜 #Japan #japanesesweets #hanabiramochi #葩餅

Honoured to be invited to Hatsugawa, first tea ceremony of the year. We enjoyed delicious food, good conversation, admired all the tea tools and of course the tea. So grateful. I love my sensei.
。。#yyj
