So, when do the first spirits appear?

Book 43 is "Yumi and the Nightmare Painter" by Brandon Sanderson.

The third secret project (number 2 wasn't Cosmere).

Meanwhile! Just finished #YumiAndTheNightmarePainter, by the intimidatingly prolific #brandonsanderson .

And it's fairly good! I say this as sort of a cynical-ish reader, as Sanderson's books are often hit or miss for me.

But this one? It's arguably his most "mature" work, with lots to say about religion and art and human nature and stuff.

This said, it does get a little bogged down by Sanderson's inevitable "LOOK AT THE COOL MAGIC WITH CHARTS" exposition at the end, but hey.

I read #YumiAndTheNightmarePainter over several flights during my Japan trip.

#BrandonSanderson wrote this anime-inspired Korea/Japan-like setting romance novel during the Covid days. It's got #BodySwap shenanigans like #YourName, but in a sci-fi /fantasy setting. The romance plot and focus on fantasy jobs was inspired by #FinalFantasyX.

Unfortunately, even if it's a standalone novel, it requires understanding the basics of Hoid and the #Cosmere to understand the full context, so not a good first book of his to start with.

My daughter recently read #YumiAndTheNightmarePainter by #BrandonSanderson and is channeling #Yumi a bit by stacking stones. #Cosmere

I bought art from this one as well. Print on metal by Aliya Chen (doesn't look like she is on Mastodon).

Spoilers in the description text as this is from the end of the book.

@KeybladeSpirit It's a shame that some publishers treat audiobooks as watered down versions of the originals.

Not long ago we received positive feedback from our customer that they enjoyed our audiobook version more, because illustrations had image descriptions. The publisher's audiobook just left them our as if the original didn't have any images.

Happy exception has been Brandon Sanderson's audiobook versions of his secret projects. Namely "Yumi and the nightmare painter" has illustration descriptions in the audiobook version.

#YearOfSanderson July: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. A #Cosmere novel.

A copy of the leatherbound book, a bookmark showing one of the internal illustrations, a sticker, and a Cosmere character pin of Shallan from Stormlight.

I finished #Yumi and The Nightmare Painter by #BrandonSanderson. I loved it! One of my favorite #cosmere books. I feel like the romance felt a bit abrupt but it won me over in the end. The world building, as always, was a delight. And the illustrations were jaw-droppingly gorgeous. This would make a decent entry point for new readers, though they will miss the many cosmere connections. What did you think? (Spoiler for cover)

Finished Brandon Sanderson's Yumi and the Nightmare Painter the other day and it was very enjoyable. So far I've loved each of the secret projects for different reasons, but this one is my current favorite.

I wasn’t sure I was really in the mood to engage with #BrandonSanderson ‘s new book when it came out at 7pm local time, but I figured I’d read the first chapter to get a feel for what it was about.

It’s now 2am, I’ve finished the book, but I have not yet finished crying.

#YumiAndTheNightmarePainter is really good!
