Across the Middle East and North Africa, there are stories which have influenced generations of reader's and this makes me wonder, what will you be reading for World Book Night?
One story is 'Osnat and Her Dove' by Sigal Samuel, which speaks about the life and legacy of Osnat Barzani who lived from 1590 to 1670 in Mosul, Mesopotamia, and became the worlds first female rabbi.

It's incredible to think, that in the Arab American National Museum a door is on public display. This door is a direct line from the "past and present", inviting people to discover one of America's first mosques.
The door also invites people to learn about the lives of early immigrant farmers to America and shares experiences which could easily sound like a story told by John Steinbeck.

In recent years, Muslims in America have been under constant scrutiny as a consequence of American foreign policy but what has rarely been discussed is America's history with Islam.
The history of Islam in the USA is often associated with figures like Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, Louis Farrakhan and Muhammad Ali, so it's good to see a different story being told.

"One community, many voices". This is a theme being explored this Arab American Heritage Month. But how do you hear the voices of ordinary people when the media says one thing and others claim to speak for you?
The Arab American National Museum is based in Dearborn, Michigan, and is the only museum dedicated to documenting and elevating the experiences of the Arab American community. Some stories need sharing ❤️

Learn how a man born into slavery became one of the most influential voices for democracy. Frederick Douglass' life and words have certainly left us with a powerful legacy.

If you start your classical journey at the Manchester Arndale branch of Waterstones, they have a wonderful section just dedicated to books from ancient Greece. It's like a letter of love from history❤️
From ancient Greece to naming Mesopotamia, it's incredible to think that Greek influences on our daily lives include Democracy, The Olympics, running a Marathon and doctors taking the Hippocratic Oath.

World Book Night is taking place on the 23rd April and all The Reading Agency are asking, is that people participate in a #readinghour from 7pm. For this, we may need to draw on the power of a short story.
But what short stories are best for an hour on the sofa with a good book? Personally, I'd go for either Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle or Close Range: Wyoming Stories by Annie Proulx. The floor is now open for ideas 🤔

Who is excited to see the upcoming film adaptation of The Odyssey and is anyone going to use it as an excuse to read this fantastic story by Homer?
As we're celebrating the national #YearofReading, it's worth knowing that Penguin have released a stunning hard back edition of this Greek classic.

While many people are familiar with 'Of Mice and Men' and 'Grapes of Wrath', have you ever read John Steinbeck's non-fiction books 'America and Americans' or 'Travels with Charley'?
In 1960, John Steinbeck set out in his pick-up truck with his dog Charley to rediscover and chronicle his native USA, on a 10,000-mile journey that took him through almost forty states.

Seeing this in Manchester and dedicated to those in the Soviet Union who died during WW2, was a stark reminder of the men who served in the Merchant Navy on Britain's Arctic Convoys.

It's quite incredible that Ellen Wilkinson (1891-1947) started her teaching career in 1906, at the Oswald Road Primary School in Chorlton-C-Hardy, South Manchester.
On the 16th November 1945, as Britain's Minister of Education under the post-WW2 government, Ellen Wilkinson MP spoke at the founding conference of UNESCO in London.
These are her words.

Despite ending almost ninety years ago, the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil War has left its mark on both culture and global politics. For many, the Spanish Civil War represented a prelude to the 1939-1945 World War Two.
As the US Holocaust Memorial Museum explains, some 35,000 to 40,000 volunteers from more than 50 countries also joined the International Brigades, in an effort to stop General Franco's nationalist forces.

We're making poverty history with these donations for the Wood Street Mission Books Forever appeal. Last year, Wood Street distributed 14,710 new books to young people across Manchester and Salford.
Books like these will go alongside copies of Anne Franks Diary, The Swimmer of Auschwitz and other world history inspired donations. These will definitely engage young minds during the Year of Reading.

It's incredible that 30 men and women from Salford, have been identified for their roles in the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil War.
This is part of an ongoing campaign by the International Brigade Memorial Trust to build a lasting monument to them.
What will fascinate people is the diversity of the working class people involved and their lives before, during and after the conflict.

We've seen the film but have we thought about it's impact? Since the success of Schindlers List in 1993 and the publication of this book in 1995, both factories owned by Oskar Schindler during WW2 have been converted into museums.
Just last year, the last factory owned by Oskar Schindler during WW2, reopened in the Czech Republic but as a museum dedicated to the memory of the industrialist credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust.

During World War Two, Manchester born Madge Addy served with the Special Operations Executive, set up by Britain to aid resistance movements in occupied Europe,
In the post-war years, SOE became known to the public through the stories of British agents like Violette Szabo, Noor Inayat Khan, Nancy Wake and Odette Hallowes.

Did you know Manchester has its own Anne Frank Tree? Taken from a sapling of the horse chestnut tree described in Anne Frank's Diary, this tree was planted in the city by the Anne Frank Trust UK.
According to the BBC in 2015, 150 trees were grown from the original that stood outside the Anne Frank House during World War Two, and have since been planted in towns and cities around the world.
