This week I'm cheating a little and sharing a whole album. JoMo Slavumas features two groups of musicians: one rock and roll band and one Eastern European folk group. The overall effect is supposed to give the idea of an alternate history where rock and roll developed in Eastern Europe out of their traditional music. I'm not sure how well the effect actually works, but it's a good album all the same!

"Volume Two: Thank You For Your Patience" is one of my recent favorite albums. Milwaukee's the Beat Index clearly had a blast making "an album of on-hold music for automated phone systems." You really need to listen to the whole album - it's sonically on point, damn catchy, and brutally funny (the endlessly repeating tri-tone at the end of the full album "Telesthesia Mix" makes me wanna cry every time).

We don't get to see the instrument at 00:08 in the video (click through to watch) for very long, and I am actually having trouble making a firm identification. Is it a form of sitar?

This #TuneTuesday category is one of my personal favorites - #WhatWasThat . Songs with unusual instruments in it. Now, I could have bombarded you with noise artists or industrial bands who bang on metal or synethsize machine noises( they do exist and I do have them), or just hit you with stuff from Mr. Bungle or Lauren Bousfield (oh, I love you so), but I tried to be a little better. This track from Fantomas does have a couple of different instruments in it, but may I argue that Mike Patton's voice is the strangest one?
