In 2020 I started having mild stability problems. If I'd had a cane the first time I fell down I would have been *much* better off. I tried some commercial ones but they turned out to be expensive, not durable, and very boring looking. So I figured out how to make my own from half inch copper pipe and porcelain. The picture shows what they look like, and this thread explains how to make them.
Materials:
* Type L half inch copper pipe -- this is the thick kind.
* Clay to make a top and a kiln to fire it in -- Probably other things will work for a top but this is what I use.
* Epoxy -- I've used both liquid and paste. They both work and each has its good and bad points.
* Masking tape.
* Half inch rubber cane tips.
Tools:
* Tube cutter -- it's really hard to cut copper pipe with a hacksaw!
* Tape measure
* Hacksaw -- Even if you have a tube cutter a hacksaw is still needed.
* Pliers

In the next pod, I'll discuss #DoctorWho: #Battlefield. I'll also enjoy complaining about #BT, #Uber, #Lime #eScooters, #Ikea, #British #redtape, and anything else I can literally shake either one of my poorly sized #walkingsticks at.

I've been trying to make myself a walking cane that suits my height, needs and fundamental lack of grounding in reality, and they keep turning into Daredevil's Billy Club...
Given there's not a four story building within about 3 miles of me, I suspect I might not need the swinging rope bit.
Which actually is sort of attached to a batarang.
Can you be done for IP transgressions for just using a tricked out cane?
I should probably get back to gaming before I cut my fingers.

There's no reason that mobility equipment has to be ugly. These are walking sticks to help with balance or with pain.
If you think that this is a trivial issue, the appearance of mobility equipment can affect the degree of ableism/ageism that other people inflict on the person using the mobility equipment. Also, far too many falls are due to people who won't use their mobility equipment because they worry that it makes them "look old".
I have not been paid in any way whatsoever for making this post.

Anyway, if you see me at a con and I’m using a cane that means it’s a dodgy walking day. It also means I think I’m Sherlock Holmes, striding along with my stylish and ever-so-dashing cane. Well, striding may be wishful thinking, but hey, I’m a writer. Imagination is a wonderful thing.
