  3. Syndicate Wars was released 30 years ago on 23rd October 1996.

The only thing they got wrong is that this game is set about 150 years too far in the future.

  4. SVIW 3D was released 30 years ago in October 1996.

This is a rather obscure game, but one that's been stuck in my mind for ages. We played it for a bit maybe two times at a friend's house between TIE Fighter, Descent 2, and Worms, and I think it wasn't very fun. But the visuals stuck with me and I've been trying to figure out what it was for ages, until someone on Mastodon suggested it as fitting my description a year ago.

  5. Marathon Infinity was released 30 years ago on 15th October 1996 for Mac.

So that's why that Halo game is called that. (Even though made by developers with no connection to Marathon.)

  6. The Christmas Release Window in 1996 was absolutely nuts. Nearly half of the most notable game releases that years happened in just nine weeks from mid October to mid December.

  7. I highly recommend if you're interested in #videogamehistory to sign up for VGP Play. It's completely free, most of the interviews are in English, and they have interviewed over 400 people for this project already.

    vgpplay.com/home

    It's a remarkable resource - and I've helped a bit!

  8. One surprising get they got is Jeff Frederiksen, the one core member of the Dave Nutting team I have not interviewed!

    vgpplay.com/video?w=59858

Always wonderful to see the forgotten pioneers let people know about them. #videogamehistory

  9. 🚀 Wow, the Video Game History Foundation just hit the "5000 magazines nobody will ever read" #milestone. 🎉 Next up: probably digitizing the post-it notes from your mom's fridge. 🍕 Because why preserve relevant history when you can immortalize 90s game ads? 🤯

  10. There's a whole subseries on the VGPPlay site dedicated to game musicians.

This interview with Soya Oka of #Nintendo is a particularly rare opportunity to hear about the creative process from inside the Big N. #videogamehistory

  12. Several of the Japanese interviews on the site are actually in English, so do check them out.

There's three separate interviews with Scott Tsumura, for example, about his long career at various companies. #videogamehistory

  13. Tomorrow night, Gamespace is showing off the unreleased Ms. Gorf and exhibiting the glitch art work of Jamie Fenton!

I'll be coming by to check it out. #videogamehistory

  14. As somewhat of a hobby historian of 90s videogames, I am also curious:

What games for home computers and consoles from the 80s are now considered to be the big and important classics?

I know about the ones that turned into long running series that continued to be big in the 90s. But very little about the ones that didn't.
What do you consider to be the must knowns?

  15. VGP Play has interviewed some people who are since deceased (including a very important one forthcoming).

Here's one they did with the late Manny Gerard: Warner overseer of Atari and as New York as they come. #videogamehistory

  17. Video Game History Foundation: VGHF Digital Archive passes 5000 magazines. Here’s what’s next.. “Our magazine library now spans 46 years of video game history, from 1981–2026. 18. Among their most surprising gets is Ken Kutaragi, who is notoriously evasive when it comes to talking about his past with #Sony

    vgpplay.com/video?w=60141

The video is in Japanese and only subtitled in Italian, but the people at VGP Play said English subtitles are a possibility. #videogamehistory

  19. Shattered Steel was released 30 years ago on 29th September 1996.

The first game released by BioWare. It wasn't very highly regarded at the time and rarely remembered.

  20. The Italian site VGP Play has interviewed over 100 people involved in video games and other pop culture - all on video.

Here's an interview they did with #Coleco executive Bert Reiner, telling stories about #Nintendo and more. #videogamehistory

  22. Meridian 59 launched 30 years ago on 27th September 1996.

  24. Harvester was released 30 years ago on 24th September 1996 for MS-DOS.

A game whose whole reason for being appears to have been to be as deliberately over the top gory to grab attention by causing outrage.

  25. We're all busy clowning on Xbox - but we could be clowning on Kent instead!

  27. I am also endeavoring to update the Zotero file, which I haven't done in quite some time.

    archive.org/details/video-game

These are books which are explicitly useful to people researching video games - not every book that covers history or may have an interview. #videogamehistory

  28. Part of the "Atari People" series of ads in Play Meter magazine: Atari promoted its game development staff as part of their overall team.

It's a far cry from what drove the folks who started Activision to defect. #videogamehistory

  29. Gaming in the post-Space Invaders era in Japan. #videogamehistory

  30. OMG @bitmapbooks just dropped an announcement for this in my email and OMG I AM SO EXCITED: bitmapbooks.com/en-ca/products

Bitmap's books are excellent, can't wait to get my hands on this!

[Updated to include their masto handle, didn't realize they were here. Love to see it!]

  33. After Pong was a hit, Ralph Baer wanted to get Sanders Associates into the coin-op business so he could capitalize on his Odyssey technology.

To explain the business to them, he wrote and illustrated several charts - which are still useful to us understanding the topic today! #videogamehistory

  34. The most fascinating development document from the Donkey Kong case files: Shigeru Miyamoto's notebook page from March 16, 1981. #videogamehistory

One of the listings on this page are four arcade games that presumably influenced Donkey Kong:

    -Deep/Scan
    -Defender
    -Rally-X
    -Space Panic

  35. While at the Strong Museum, I took a trip to the research room and looked through a few collections.

One of my main curiosities was about Darklands, the incredibly ambitious Microprose CRPG that is still a wildly unique experience today. #videogamehistory

  36. Tomorrow I'll be embarking on the next game in my Narrative Evolution playthrough with Ultima V. Catch me (and whatever special guests) at 10 AM CST. We'll also talk Save the Games! #videogamehistory #livestream
