  1. Z was released 30 years ago on 24th August 1996.

A game obviously created before online search engines.

The box cover is incredibly cool and memorable, though. Every time I saw it on shelves in stores, it was immediately drawing attention. Game reviews here in Germany were extremely positive, but I never knew anyone who had this game and it seems to have been very quickly forgotten.

  2. OverBlood was released 30 years ago on 2nd August 1996 for the PlayStation in Japan.

Claimed to be the first Survival Horror game with full 3D graphics.

  3. Kokumeikan / Devil's Deception / Tecmo's Deception: Invitation to Darkness was released 30 years ago on 26th July 1996 in Japan.

  4. The expansion Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal was released 30 years ago on 16th May 1996 for DOS.

I believe this was one of the very first official expansions for a PC game, which became quite common for many big games in the following years.

  5. Die Siedler II was released 30 years ago in Germany on 17th April 1996 for DOS.

Alongside X-Wing and Worms, this was one of the first games that I played for a considerable time and really understood how to play, other than having a turn at platformer or fighting games on a friend's console.

  6. While I was playing around with my non-representative list of 517 videogames from 1994 to 2001 that I consider to be classics and thinking about still having only one game for #1996InVideoGames yet, I calculated the percentages for the game releases in each month for the 8 years.

Not only is the Christmas Window very real, getting games pushed out before the end of the quarter and not when they are ready was also very real.

  7. The big surprises for me where Ceasar II and The Dig with both at 10/4, MechWarrior 2 with 12/3, and WipEout with 11/7.

But the uncontested winner of popular support was Worms with 39 favorites and 22 boost! 🎇 😮

But it really was, and still is, a really great game. 😄

The lineup for 1996 is the same length as it was for 1995, but as someone who started playing in 97/98, I think there's a lot more big famous classics reaching 30 next year.

  8. Air Combat, the first game in the much more interestingly named Ace Combat series, was released 30 years ago on 30th June 1995.

  9. Terminator: Future Shock was released 30 years ago in December 1995.

A game that has been pretty much forgotten for a long time, and I've never seen anybody talk about. But it's noteworthy for having been developed by Bethesda. This is what they were doing between Arena and Daggerfall. And apparently, and surprisingly for a movie licensed game, it was considered to be really quite good.

  10. Albion was released 30 years ago around the 16th December 1995.

To me, this is one of the most amazing and important games ever released, though I wouldn't say it's a particularly good one. I only actually played it very late, and still only got possibly halfway through it at most, but I've known about since when I first encountered any PC games at all. This is a kind of pulp space fantasy that nobody does anymore.

  11. Terminal Velocity was released 30 years ago in May 1995. A Windows version was released later in September as Fury3, which was the first game to run natively in Windows 95.

Playing this coming from X-Wing and TIE Fighter, this game was different and much simpler. But it plays a lot like Quake in a fighter plane, which was a real blast.

  12. Alone in the Dark 3 was released 30 years ago, on maybe the 16 of maybe March 1995. (I've been completely unable to confirm its release to anything more specific than being in 1995.)
