Greatly increased climb coverage in England 🏴 and Wales 🏴
Unfortunately, no dataset available for Scotland 🏴
I'm currently exploring available data for Canada 🇨🇦 as the first step outside Europe.
-
666 🤘 climbs added to #VertMatch in England.
Wales will get more data very soon.
Scotland is still a question mark. I can't find a datasource there :-(
-
Welcome to the #VertMatch climb database, Norway 🇳🇴 and France 🇫🇷 !
Harvested from publicly available national trail data. Kept publicly available, for free, for everyone:

Now improving the #VertMatch climb database coverage in Norway 🇳🇴 .
Norway's public trail network contains 36,877 trails. Processing requires combining the trail data with LiDAR data to acquire presice enough elevation data for trail running purposes.
These free and open datasets are fantastic, readily available from the government.
VertMatch climb database remains free and available to everyone.

Big update day for #VertMatch today.
New style.
Decending.
Terrain fingerprint.
etc.We also bring online the paid premium "Pacer plan". 2eur/month.
I hope the paid tier is seen as useful. The free tier remains useful as well.
All users who already had an account get a free one month.
All users who signed up fir the training feature get additional 2 free months as a thank you for testing the feature. All users can gain free months by contributing data to the public database.
-
Added season break to #VertMatch training planner.
I don't like when a training app pushes things on me when I'm not looking for training tips.
-
#VertMatch paid setup is coming together.
The idea is to keep data free, your own activity free and then ask 2e/month for having a Pacer = analysis of the data.
Additionally, contributing to the system stacks Cairn Stones for you. 200 stones gets you a free month.
Launching sometime in the coming weeks.

Whoopsie. Probably time to ho to bed.
..it's been a long time since I've been building software until 4am.
Really making progress with cool features for #VertMatch
-
Garmin, Starva and a like use user contributed data which they sell as part of their paid scubscriptions. This really annoys me.
I want to avoid doing the same with #VertMatch
Firstly, I want to keep the Climb Database freely available to everyine. Forever (assuming I can find ways to cover server costs).
Secondly, I'm setting up a reward system that automatically gathers poinst to users from every contribution. A certain level automatically converts into a free premium month.

I quite like the racing history card on #VertMatch
It gives a nice overview of past suffering and enjoyment. Also, it put the Piztal course in context. On the TEP scale the 19km I lasted in that race is tougher than any of my previous races completed. Damn.
Find your race history scale by creating a free account at:

Working to add detailed DNF results for race in #VertMatch
I keep building it to solve problems I have. So it's not coinsidence that the software evolves together with me.
That said, I'm always very happy when I get thoughts and suggestions from other users.
I will next focus on bringing decending as a core part of the system and tracking downhill training. Until now, I've been focusing on climbing only. Downhill will be much more difficult to tackle in the software. There's so much variation -
#VertMatch race comparison data has been super useful in this race preparation window.
Looks like I'm up about 20% in training and climbing training vs. ZUT prep.

Over the last week-or-so, I've been working to import public trail data to #VertMatch
The process is now complete for countries that have data easily available.
Public trail data was combined to avialable high resolution elevation data and then ran through the climb analyser algorithm which identified and categorised climbs
Climbs are here:
https://vertmatch.run/find-a-climbHere are some stats and more details what areas the data now covers.
I'm working to expand the country coverage
-
#VertMatch Now has good coverage of climbs in Bavaria, adding about 5000 verified national trail network climbs to the database.
Access to the climb database is open to everyone. No login needed.
-
The first batch of climbs from national trail networks are now live on #VertMatch
In this batch
Switzerland: 12,477
France: 723
Great Britain: 48
Finland: 13Total 13,261
Next batch will be Bavaria.
Then looking for more sources next. -
Reviewing the public trail data combined with Lidar data for elevation is looking really positive for high quality climb data for #VertMatch !
This is still on my local dev but I hope I can start deploying the data soon to prod.
-
I'm pretty excited about the next #VertMatch update.
I found public sources that allow me to import data to the climb database to cover European terrain very well without compromiseing the quality. All public government sources with CC lisence.I'll keep everythign open and available to everyone but just in a format that should be very useful for #trailrunning
Open Gvernment data FTW!

I think I'll have to change the plan for monetising #VertMatch
My original idea was to make the training feature eventually a paid feature. But looking at how many traiing apps have recently come online, that really feels like the wrong approach.
I also do not want to make the climb database paywalled. Afteral it is built together with the community, community should maintain full access to it.

Update on VertMatch & Hiking activies.
Hiking and #trailrunning place a very similar load to your body on up hills. In fact, most hills are walked up on the trails anyways. So it makes sense to make sure hiking activities count when training.
#VertMatch now counts your #hiking activities towards your training TEP calculations.

Two big feature updates to the #VertMatch Training feature:
* Training now tracks decending as well and gives you a plan how to prepare for your race's downhills as well.
* You can upload a planned route to get the elevation analysis of the route already before the run.

Taper starts tomorrow.
I think I did a bit too aggressive taper for ZUT. This time I try to keep some more intensity during taper, not just easy running.
Although, I have some pain in my legs.
Top prio is to be a the startline withouth pain but also be there with enough fitness to be able to complete the race. -
Update day for #VertMatch
* New Auth0 login domain. Unfortunately, this will throw off password managers but is a necessary fix. The same password still works, you'll just probably have tlook for it under Auth0 domain.
* You can now upload bigger than 25mb race files.
* Training interface now makes more sense. Training chargers your batteries, instead. Higher levels they are, better you are trained in that specific area.

I just couldn't make myself go out to do hill reps so I asked #VertMatch to create a coresponding indoor bike workout for me.
I really like this feature.Something is better than nothing, when training. This lowers the friction. I don't need to think about the session structure, I automatically get one that helps me today.

A round of features for #VertMatch just got released.
You can now do a detailed evaluation of your race. This will help finetune the training algorithm when preparing to the next one, as well as help you when comparing races.
Also, it works as a diary.
You can evaluate your performance on different parts of the race as well as each climb separately.
You can also now see all new features on the "what's new" page:

This was supposed to be my first 100k but wasn't to be. The race was shortened due to weather forecast. IT turned out to be damn tough anyway. I came very close to a DNF.
