  1. @tc_morekindness Yes, it was a very confusing story.

Vee Jay was one of the first black-owned record companies, founded by the radio DJ Vivian Carter and her husband Jimmy Bracken in 1953. Their first major hit was "Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite" by the Spaniels, which was co-written and produced by Vivian's brother, Calvin Carter.

During the first decade of the label it released lots of great blues, doowop, gospel and early soul records, often with good deal of commercial success.

By the early 1960s Vee Jay was moving increasingly towards the pop market. Among other things, it was releasing the early hits of the Four Seasons (produced independently by Bob Crewe). The label also acquired the rights to some of the early Beatles material, although the two 45s it released in 1963 didn't receive much of attention.

Unfortunately the business side of Vee Jay was not very well-run. Although the company was selling millions of records, by 1964 it was in constant state of internal turmoil. There were management turnovers, relocation of the headquarters from Chicago to Los Angeles (and then back to Chicago), and lots of lawsuits, many of them related to their biggest-selling artists, the Four Seasons and the Beatles.

  2. However, the Swinging Blue Jeans version of "You're No Good" was also a cover version of an American recording by Betty Everett:

Everett's version had been a top ten R&B hit and a minor pop hit in late 1963 and early 1964. Produced by Calvin Carter, it was her first charted record for the Chicago-based Vee Jay records. The song was recorded at the Universal Studios, the leading studio in the city, and in addition to the musicians, the background was enhanced by the members of the vocal group the Dells, who were stomping their feet on the wooden studio floor.

  3. This week's #TuneTuesday theme is #odetothewall. Here's the great original version of an early Randy Newman tune, which was later recorded by many other artists:

Jerry Butler: I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore (1964)

"I hear the neighbors talking about you and me
Guess I've heard most every word
    'Cause the talking's loud
And the walls are much too thin"

(hagan backups)
