  1. It had been a few years since I had last played the late sixties Goldwax recordings of Spencer Wiggins. But I did yesterday, and they sounded as great as ever - one of the many highlights was this version of the Aretha Franklin classic:

  2. Going for a double bill today with @loewe’s #MondayCovers and @HailsandAles’s #BlackMetalMonday.

Walg (translated; Disgust) makes modern melodic black metal and wear their inspiration on their sleeves. While at the same time, properly leaning in to what the Dutch language has to offer for extra growling noises. After finally seeing them live this weekend, they deserve more recognition. Added bonus is that they are from #Groningen, my hometown.

  7. Having a slightly surreal but fairly good day, so this one fits.

  8. Although Betty Everett's recording was the first one to chart, the first recording of "You're No Good" had been done by Dee Dee Warwick, the younger sister of Dionne Warwick. Her more aggressive reading of the song was produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, arranger by Garry Sherman, and it came out on the Jubilee label in September 1963:

  9. However, the Swinging Blue Jeans version of "You're No Good" was also a cover version of an American recording by Betty Everett:

Everett's version had been a top ten R&B hit and a minor pop hit in late 1963 and early 1964. Produced by Calvin Carter, it was her first charted record for the Chicago-based Vee Jay records. The song was recorded at the Universal Studios, the leading studio in the city, and in addition to the musicians, the background was enhanced by the members of the vocal group the Dells, who were stomping their feet on the wooden studio floor.

  10. It's mostly forgotten now, but for a brief period during the mid-sixties, my old hometown Hämeenlinna was known as "the Liverpool of Finland". The most popular and also most original musical artist to come out of the town was Irwin Goodman, but there were quite a few others as well.

One of these acts was a beat group called Eddy & the Lightnings. The flip side of their second single was a version of a Clint Ballard Jr. composition called "You're No Good", with Finnish-language lyrics by Matti Sortila and Orvokki Itä (which was a pseudonym for the profilic old-school songwriter Reino Helismaa).

The video clip is great fun, as it was filmed on location in Hämeenlinna, apparently during the winter of 1964/65, as there is snow on the ground and the group members seem to be freezing.

The highlights include a ride on an escalator, which may have been the first in town, and playing on the wing of Hanssin Jukka, an old DC-2 airplane, which was located next to the bus station and used as cafeteria at the time.
