  6. Not that anyone can top Bananarama's 1983 original, but this is a good somewhat jazzy cover.

  9. @Tecumseh An excellent version!

For many Finns, this George Harrison classic is perhaps better-known as the 1989 hit version recorded by a Finnish group, the Clifters:

The Clifters: Elekieltä (live version, 1989)
    youtube.com/watch?v=LFCH-UQbcmU

Musically, this version is closer to the original Beatles recording than Nina Simone's take, but the Finnish-language lyrics by Jaana Rinne are completely different.

The leader of the Clifters, Jiri Nikkinen, later formed his own Beatles tribute band, which does true-to-the-original versions of the whole Beatles repertoire.

  13. The Humppaveikot version of "She Loves You" reminded me of another version of the tune. After she had left Motown in 1964, Mary Wells recorded an album of Beatles covers, "Love Songs to the Beatles", which surprisingly had big-band style arrangements for the songs:

  17. Heard this one on the radio last night - one of the more esoteric Finnish-language Beatles covers:

    Humppa-Veikot: Hän sinun on (1965)
    youtube.com/watch?v=SUJiTvNu-B4

The group Humppaveikot was formed in 1958, first as a studio orchestra for a popular radio show. Most of the musicians were veterans, who had started their careers in the 1930s, playing in the legendary Dallapé orchestra. The vocalist Teijo Joutsela had been a member of a well-known singing group, Kipparikvartetti.

For some reason, their record company, Scandia, decided that they should record Finnish-language versions of two recent Lennon/McCartney compositions:

    #MenAndVolts - “Abba Zabba” (1979)

There was an uber-serious question posed in ex-punk rock circles back in the day: “who was greater . . . #TheVelvetUnderground or #TheStooges?” Now I'm guessing if Men & Volts heard this, they would’ve responded by gleefully shouting “#CaptainBeefheart!” Indeed M&S once worked up an entire set of Beefheart covers, even playing them live to Boston’s befuddled underground music types a few times in 1979. If you’re a lifelong fan of the Magic Band you probably already know about this lo-fi archival wonder. But everyone else? Get your priorities straight and start digging this as much as I do.
