    Yossi Melman writes in #Haaretz about Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan Amit, who died at 80 and was quietly buried shortly before Israel’s attack on Iran, ending a life destroyed by Israeli military intelligence’s cover-up of drug trafficking operations. Amit was forced to oversee “Operation Poisoned Candy” - part of Unit 504’s systematic collaboration with Middle East drug networks in the 1970s.

    When Amit’s driver was caught with 19 kilograms of hashish and implicated him, military authorities feared exposure of Unit 504’s secrets. Rather than face trial, Amit was forcibly hospitalized and subjected to 11 electroshock treatments to silence him. He was later imprisoned for 7.5 years on espionage charges after attempting to expose the truth.

    Journalist Yossi Melman, who covered Amit’s case for 30 years, describes how the security establishment buried the truth through strict censorship orders upheld by Israel’s Supreme Court. Amit observed: “We live in the State of Israel, but alongside it exists another state - the Intelligence State. They can enter anywhere and do anything they want.”

    Research reveals Unit 504 systematically recruited major drug dealers as intelligence assets, including Mohammed Bro - “one of the world’s largest drug dealers” wanted by Interpol. The unit maintained agreements allowing drug operations to continue in exchange for intelligence, using smuggling routes as cover across #Lebanon, #Syria, #Jordan and #Egypt.
