Truchas was founded in 1754 on a Spanish Land Grant. Due to the remote location, the town didin't change dramatically until a paved road was established in the early 1970s. Robert Redford filmed "The Milagro Beanfield War" around Truchas. These days, there are a lot of artists/studios, well worth checking out if you are cruising the High Road to Taos.

Located at over 8000 feet above sea level, there was no paved road until the 1970s; however, that made the community attractive to artists moving to Northern #NewMexico for its arts scene, particularly after Robert Redford's The Milagro Beanfield War (1988) was filmed in Truchas.
