It took me quite a while to finish Ti West's X trilogy. I didn't like X; I liked Pearl. Now, I've come full circle: I didn't like MaXXXine. I have no idea what West was trying to achieve with it. The film touches on horror, thriller, drama, and action, but it didn't convince me in any of these categories, nor as a whole. Mia Goth is as magnetic as always.

Cuando en 2022 se estrenó X lo más inesperado no fue el aire desenfadado que, sin renunciar a una pertinente denuncia sobre la fama, nos brindó aunando lo mejor del slasher noventero con un fondo de contenido crítico, sino que terminase de posicionar por un lado a Ti West (por sí mismo solo había dado tumbos en el género) como autor, dando la impresión de que su paso por la tv (Wayward Pines, El exorcista y The Outcast, ¡menudo tridente!) fue su verdadera escuela, y por otro, a Mia Goth, que había encarnado a personajes más bien ácimos.
Luego que una trilogía. Se temió lo peor: abusar de la gallina de los huevos de oro para dejarnos, otra vez, un regusto amargo como tantas veces ha pasado en el audiovisual.
Pearl llegó casi después, estaba planeado así, y bajó el nivel porque el asunto redneck nos metía en las profundidades apestosas de su país, lo que restaba gracejo y dinamismo a la entrega en comparación con la anterior. Pearl, en principio, solo mantuvo el tipo; en realidad, hizo más: abrió campo.
El año pasado se cerró la Odisea de Maxine en una Los Ángeles ochenterísima. Volvió a subir la apuesta y ganó. No es que el filme ofreciera algo especial, sino que fue consecuente con todo su microuniverso de tramas, escenarios y personajes. Mejor, con la sed de fama de la prota, porque el viaje sangriento de la niña se debe a su hambre de focos y objetivos.
La trilogía X (que a ratos se siente una Showgirls carnicera) es historia de la serie B. Destiny fulfilled, por suerte.
MaXXXine tiene un final too much no para bien, pues cae en clichés sectarios, la resolución facilona, pero ejecuta con garbo la faena en la parte de la acción -festival de pintura roja- y en el posterior ascenso -o no- de la prota al estrellato. Ya nos lo advirtieron:

After not liking X and not understanding Ti West being hailed by fans as the new messiah of the genre, I was excited to see Pearl, and lo and behold, I really like this movie. The use of Oz elements works very well, and the characterization of Pearl is also great. The five minute long take monologue packs quite a punch, and the dance sequence impressed me even more.

Y nos terminamos la trilogía X ayer en el cine. Maxxxine, es otra gran película, sin llegar al nivel de Pearl. Además es una película muy distinta. Yo diría que ni siquiera cae en el género horror. Es más bien un thriller dramático.

Bol som v letnom kine na MaXXXine. Zakončenie hororvej triliógie od Ti Westa sa mi páčilo, ale najviac mi učaroval soundtrack. Napriek tomu, že som sa narodil až na konci osemdesiatok, hudba 70's a 80's patrí medzi moje najobľúbenejšie. Dovolím si tu teda krátke vlákno s výberom toho najlepšieho, čo vo filme zaznelo.
A to najlepšie prišlo až na samotný záver, v titulkoch hrala Kim Carnes s jej najznámejším hitom Bette Davis Eyes.
