Kanesuke's residence, 'Tsutsumi-tei' (堤第 'Pavilion on the Riverbank'), was later inherited by Murasaki's father, Fujiwara-no-Tametoki (藤原為時 ?-1029).

  11. Legend has it that on the 15th night of the 8th month in 1004 Murasaki Shikibu (紫式部), on retreat with her mistress Empress Shōshi, was inspired to write The Tale of Genji.

The area's rivers were named after the ancient chromatic scale: Ro-gawa (呂川) after the 6 even-numbered notes (呂曲) and Ritsu-gawa (律川) after the 6 odd (律曲).
Ōhara is also home to the beautiful 'Otonashi-no-taki' (音無の滝 'Silent Waterfall'), featured in The Tale of Genji.

Long ago, there was an exceptionally beautiful cat that caught the eye of the Emperor. This cat was so immaculately white and its fur as silky as threads of silk, earning it the name "The Glowing Tail."

Shall we embark on ”The Tail of Genji”? 🤭

  16. Katsura Rikyū (桂離宮) stands on the west bank of the Katsura-gawa, sprawling over 70,000 square metres.

Since ancient times this area has been considered the perfect moon-viewing spot, and in the Heian period 'rustic' villas of the aristocracy were constructed beside the river.

The garden was created by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd heads of the Hachijō-no-miya family: princes Toshihito (智仁親王), Toshitada (智忠親王 d.1662) & Yasuhito (智忠親王 d.1665).
