A new study from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (#JGU) is the first to show how flexibly this neural synchrony adjusts to different situations and that this dynamic coordination is closely linked to cognitive abilities.
"Specific signals in the midfrontal brain region are better synchronized in people with higher cognitive ability -- especially during demanding phases of reasoning," explained Professor Anna-Lena Schubert from JGU's Institute of #Psychology, lead author of the study
The researchers focused on the midfrontal area of the brain and the measurable coordination of the so-called #theta waves. These brainwaves oscillate between 4 and 8 hertz and belong to the group of slower neural frequencies. "They tend to appear when the brain is particularly challenged such as during focused thinking or when we need to consciously control our behavior,"

[Перевод] Соревнование VN1: чему я научился у прогнозистов
С сентября по октябрь 2024 года мне выпала честь организовать VN1 Forecasting Competition — соревнование по прогнозированию, в котором приняли участие около 250 команд и отдельных участников. Целью конкурса было предсказать объём продаж различных онлайн‑продавцов на 13 недель вперёд. Первый был разогревочным: участники могли протестировать разные модели, увидеть свои результаты и сравнить их с успехами соперников. Второй этап был решающим — участникам разрешалось подать только один окончательный прогноз, а его точность оставалась неизвестной до самого финала. После соревнования я собрал мнения и выводы 20 сильнейших участников: мы обсудили их подходы, трудности, с которыми они столкнулись, и найденные решения. В этой статье я поделюсь основными уроками, которые вынес из этого соревнования.

Rat anterior cingulate neurons responsive to rule or strategy changes are modulated by the hippocampal theta rhythm and sharp-wave ripplesI won't do a super-long summary like last time, but please share your thoughts if you've read it!
The author line-up is quite interesting, I think they were all students at the time of data collection which seems to have happened a long time ago, and now many are PIs (@BenoitGirard probably knows about the backstory...)! Probably a pandemic paper??
The scientific question (what supports rule recognition and strategy shift) is really interesting, and they record in the frontal cortex (#ACC) as well as #Hippocampus (ventral CA1!), but the rats just were not up to the task (1/5 rats actually did what they wanted). I am also not fully convinced by some of the analysis. @jessetm I'd be interested to know what you think of their strategy detection method!
Why is it that all papers looking at these themes always end up being.. quite complex??

⬆️ SO that paper was actually one of the most interesting papers on #PlaceCells and #NeuroRats that I’ve seen in a while! It does sound too fancy to be true, but - provided the authors do a bit more analyses of the movements during the task - it might be showing that rats can “intentionally” change the activity of their place cells?! While not changing their actual location, and during #Theta …. We were all pretty impressed!
