  1. Oooh, is this making the rounds?

This is where my tech comes from:

    OS PC/Laptop: 🇮🇪
    OS Smartphone: 🇺🇸
    Browser: 🇺🇸 🇳🇴
    Messaging: 🇺🇸
    Microblogging: 🇩🇪
    Office Software: 🇩🇪
    Cloud: 🇩🇪
    Payment Service: 🇺🇸 🇪🇺

    Percentage of 🇺🇸: 40%

    Created @ fingolas.eu/MyTech

Always aiming at lowering that US percentage. Can't wait for Wero to be broadly adopted, so I can ditch PayPal, for example.

  2. France Accelerates Exodus from US Tech with Open-Source Push

France is taking a bold step towards digital independence, with a push to ditch American commercial software for open-source alternatives, and all government ministries are now racing against the clock to reduce their reliance on US tech by the fall. This move signals a growing unease among European governments about Silicon…

  5. I have been a huge LLM sceptic, but after testing @MistralAI 's #LeChat this week (they get bonus points for sustainability, privacy and are EU based and regulated and not #UStech either), I'm starting to be seriously impressed - they have moved on a lot.
I can see why these tools are taking off for daily life.
@jburnmurdoch has an interesting piece on LLMs in general in the FT today too:

Social media is populist and polarising; AI may be the opposite - giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle

  6. @DRIndland

  7. Yesterday was the "Digital Independence Day", which I only learned of, today. Coincidentally yesterday I wrote my first blog post in years! I used to be on wordpress.com for nearly a decade, then moved my blogging to #g+ #facebook, #linkedin and co.

With the process of shutting down all my #ustech and #bigtech accounts, I felt the need of having a place to myself again, where I could share my thoughts. For now, I've decided to use #zola as a static site generator, which gets hosted to @Codeberg

Here's my successful "Hello, world!" that'll allow me to further my journey towards #digitalindependence as this static site will not only replace my old blogging software, but I plan to replace with it so much more! What a fitting coincidence, to have that post see the light of day on the Digital Independence Day :)

  13. I am tackeling my next project in moving away from #BigTech and #USTech companies. This one is one that is really hard for me, and that pains me a bit: I'm moving away from #GitHub - it's hard for me, because I've been brought up with #SVN and instantly fell in love with #DVCS, and with #git I instantly also started using GitHub. And I **really** used it like their slogan suggested: Like "facebook for programmers". I followed friends and colleagues, followed projects I loved and people that seemd interesting to me, and even had a couple of discussions that started with a commit or new repository on Github. Plus, I love their mascot and have a huge amount of stickers featuring #Octocat - to me GitHub was a crucial part of my programming hobby and upbringing.

However, since #Microsoft accquired it, my engagement got less, even though I stayed, because no other solution at that time was remotely what I wanted and loved about GitHub.

Since then, lots of things have happend; GitHub fired people that spoke out against the capitol attack, it does business with ICE, and is now monetizing the works of millions of open source developers with their integration of AI in GitHub that you never agreed to and cannot opt out of. And GitHub's parent company openly supports Trump, and meddles in international juristriction and politics by blocking political enemies of the Trump regime from their accounts (i.e. the E-Mail account of ICC Prosecutors).

I think I won't delete my old GitHub account; but active and new repositories will be moved to @Codeberg - I am not sure if it is the right home for me, or if I long-term will be hosting my own @gitea or @forgejo instance; but for a start I think it is the right thing to do, and as I am currently working on something I would like to put under versioning, now is the best time to do it. 18. DHH is a bit controversial these days, but he's absolutely right about how stupid we in Denmark have been about our tech dependency on the #UStech giants...

  19. So thousands of programmers have been laid off recently, they can almost all work remotely and we all need to get off US tech as quickly as possible. Seems like the perfect opportunity to fund an open source collaborative suite of products to replace meta, alphabet, microsoft apple and amazon.

@carolecadwalla.bsky.social interviews historian Robert Kagan about the end of American hegemony, the EU's need to individuate from the US immediately, and the prospects for MAGA's and America's future. Our crisis is well advanced.

The #USStateDepartment barred five #Europe|ans, including leaders of organisations addressing #digitalhate and a former #EUcommissioner, accusing them of pressuring #UStech firms to #censor #Americanviewpoints. This action is part of the #Trump administration’s campaign against #foreigninfluence over #onlinespeech, utilising immigration law.
