While in general I appreciated the feedback, since I knew why stuff looked off--I also think it's pretty stinging because well, let's just say, other people passed to the next pitching stage of the round whose art needed WAY MORE improvement than me. IDK man, I'll cop to a huge ego if it sounds like it but I'd like to think I at least proved I know how anatomy works. If I need to improve, then what does that person need to do? They should be asked to improve too!

Anyway, Aisha is technically the main character. She was always there since the beginning (like almost everyone else in this comic) and part of her inspiration came from one of my alma mater's student magazines, which had a section about uhhhh, had to be about Muslim women in America or something because they had photos of a hijabi performing different typical "American" activities. I have the issue somewhere deep in storage but one photo was said hijabi holding a football, a jersey and of course, being still conservatively dressed with long sleeves pants. She even had on the warpaint XD And I went "there, that's how Aisha should be! A giant NERD!"

Interestingly, in some feedback I received when reaching out to people in appropriate "yes you can ask for feedback here" places, especially Muslims, a lot of them took issue with Aisha being involved with such a violent sport and wondered why. Interestingly part deux, I, uh, wondered if they thought she was going to play herself, since the idea was that she never would play. It was everyone else! I thought I had made this clear but perhaps I didn't either. You never know! But either way, it was a fair worry. Just one that, uh, would break the entire thing if I took it into consideration...

I think someone suggested changing it to soccer and I went "but that's violent too????" Obviously less violent than football, right, but IDK man, maybe we were watching different soccer games...Also, if I wanted to do a comic about soccer, I'd just done it. Just saying :P Boring!

Most if not all, of the people who said the above feedback were men though, and I'm not saying that to diminish their feedback. More like, I wish what women thought as well for a rounded intake!

  5. In case readers at home only see this toot: this is a second toot attached to one with more recent art/character design! These specific pages are from an old comic pitch to the now-defunct online magazine Sparkler Monthly. As it was then, it still is now: The Footballerinas is about a young girl deciding to create an all-girls' (American) football team at her school. Hijinks ensue, of course. Each of the girls come from different sports backgrounds, bringing said skills to this newfangled experience...

Unfortunately like everything in my life, even if I planned for one thousand months ahead of time, I always rush things. In this case, it was believing the lie told to me that grad school would allow me hours of free time LOL. So a good chunk of these pages were rushed--I'm sure this is why some of the feedback say to improve at drawing, basically. My actual skill at the time wasn't proven. I'd hope the writing, synopsis and script werestrong enough despite that, but alas, no such thing.

I was told my story is quite charming, but the art fits better something more dramatic, not a sports story. Which is very fair but also, too bad I have no money to pay someone to collab with--or that anytime I try to generally collab ANYTHING, it always falls through with me holding the bag lul. So welp, the story's stuck with me.

  9. This is technically "old" art, if you count months-old art as old (or has it been a year already since I drew this? I can't remember anymore :akko_badday: ), but--a character sheet of the cast from my Footballerinas pitch. I wanted to, uh, not show anything from it for reasons but eh, beggars can't be choosers.

Two characters may have their design tweaked later. :zerotwowave:

The comic pitch is about a young girl deciding to create an all-girls' (American) football team at her school. Hijinks ensue, of course. Each of the girls come from different sports backgrounds, bringing said skills to this newfangled experience...

The inspirations for it come from childhood memories (and wanting to "give" that same feeling) of watching Babysitters' Club and Mighty Ducks, with a heavy dose of my time spent at my alma mater's student sports bar which showed all airings of, well sports, on its TVs. (One specific game that started to spark it was one involving the Cincinnati Bengals, especially with Ocho Cinco :zerotwoevillaugh: )

I also originally pitched this to Sparkler Monthly in 2017 and got soundly rejected--I'll post the pages below!
