@ChrisMayLA6 Some of it I'm sure comes up because we like to look into people posting to get a feel for if it's worth following or not. While looking through old posts you find something interesting and reply or boost it. Others see it and suddenly a tag is trending like the one year old #TellAlice last week 🙂

@alice There was a girl in my class with very long hair. The girls always wanted to braid or just play with the hair. She started getting more and more annoyed so once she just got up and said "No, I don't want you to touch my hair, It's a lot of work to wash and dry and I can't keep doing it every day!". And can you believe it, they let her be after that 🙂

Our class was almost smokers free. But some boys were using that tobacco you put under the lip. The clothes smell revolting.

@alice Before the BBC made Junior Mastermind, my London borough trialled the format in a big library. My parents entered me and I came second.

I would have come first, but I had the same amount of points as someone else and she got the tiebreak question. I got a £15 book token and special mention in school for my troubles.

1. The FBI tried to get me fired from my job
2. The FBI mentioned my 4chan username in a federal hacking case
3. The FBI delayed my wedding

And the most amusing part? as far as I can tell, all three of these events are /completely unrelated/.

Once in a former life, I was pre-sales technical support for a software company. At a meeting with prospective clients in Nevada (huge state agency) our sales team couldn't make the projector work.

So I stalled for time by asking our clients about any personal UFO stories they had. An hour later, the projector was fixed, but people were still relating these INCREDIBLE personal experiences about weird UFO stuff they'd seen.

I also did that the first time with sushi. It was memorable, and people laughed at me.

My fun, weird, and trivial item is that I once had an office 4,000 m underground in a gold mine.

I had simply asked if there was a place I could lock up my equipment rather than lug it through security and the cage (elevator) each day. The next day they had carved out a cubicle and installed a desk and chair, with a wire mesh gate that could be padlocked

@alice I have exactly one tattoo. When I was about 14 I think, my brother stabbed me in my right middle finger's first phalanx with an ink pen, and it left a small ink dot. My mom said not to worry, "it will go away in a couple weeks".

30 years later...

I'm always curious about the exact time period on these stories. Much like this, I think I was introduced to an early Linux system back in the 90s, right around when OS/2 Warp was released. Maybe 94 ish?

I didn't really get it, at the time.
I mean, you didn't even have the choice of Wi-Fi OR audio yet. (There was also no such thing as Wi-Fi, at least not for consumers)

@alice Back in the >koff< 90s I was staying with friends in Bristol. We went out to buy ingredients for dinner, which included a whole salmon. Crossing the Bearpit, a stranger called out to me by my then nickname. No idea who he was. Later, I was cornered in the Brewhouse by a chap describing himself as a "Jewish prophet" who said comet Shoemaker Levy 9 fortetold armageddon. Later still, I was barred for making, "lewd and obscene gestures at the barman with a 10lb salmon." #TellAlice

@alice For about two years, both my mom and I believed that our house might be haunted. We could faintly hear children's music in the kitchen at night- a music box, specifically. There were no obvious sources for the sound. It is a WW2 era house, so ghosts seemed plausible in lieu of better explanations.

One night, I took out the trash and heard the ice cream truck: a music box playing children's tunes at the same time we always heard it. The house was not haunted.

@alice In the 90s, I played around with making fonts. I never got seriously good at it (it turns out that making a few characters is easy but soon you’re stumped by how you’re going to make a S or & that looks OK), though made a few simple geometric fonts, one of which was an adaptation of the characters on European Teletext displays.

Some time later, I received in the mail a DVD of the UK comedy series Look Around You, sent by the producers because they used my font in subtitles.

Latin at school helped me understand the anatomical terms of the uni degree that I dropped out of.

@alice when I was a kid I kind of freaked myself out at a symphony concert.

I was bored and not into the particular pieces they were playing that evening, so I stared at one particular violinist and focused on causing them a broken violin string. After I'd been doing this maybe 20 minutes they suddenly startled, stopped playing, and got up and walked off stage at the end of the piece even though the whole rest of the violin section stayed to play the next piece.

@pjf @alice we went camping at a lake in northern victoria, the yabbies (crayfish) and redfin (fish) were absurdly abundant but we didn’t have a boat, which hindered our harvest. My dad and uncles salvaged¹ an aluminium sheet roadside billboard (advertising cigarettes) and made a canoe out of it. We ate like kings for the rest of the week. #TellAlice

@alice I once went to an event, and sat on a bench at the train station in the city where it was going to take plac. After a bit it occurred to me that it was a day before christmas eve, and I wasn't due to travel there for another three days. That started my first and (so far) only lucid dream. I think I mostly used it to fly around and make silly poses in the air.

@alice since i was a child, there's weird lore about me in my social circles. when i joined my first and current job, it took just a few weeks (iirc) for me yo be a clone (#4 or 5, i think) of my original self.

I started as an intern, and as such I didn't do the harder interview. Even now my coworkers joke about the interview process being a "knife duel to the death" (a reference to YuYuHakusho's latin-american dub) and me being killed in the process and still getting the position. #tellalice

Early bank card payment terminals sent DTMF from the keypad to the big terminal, and early Sony Discmans (Discmen?) could eavesdrop on the tones.
Guy behind me in line at a store one time bet me he could tell me my PIN. He was close enough (he heard 0-0 as one zero) that I blew him anyway.
