Ok, now in the sustainable digitalization panel, what a difference in vibe.
Now we are actually getting material, inputs are eg. about production of devices, rebound effects in music streaming, has videoconferencing actually reduced travel emissions...
One shameful thing is that even after contacting 10 people in the federal administration, no one could be found to speak here. One room over, administration reps are tripping over each other in panels when it comes to #AIHype #SwissIGF #SwissIGF24 -
Ok second vote now lamenting that the "AI governance" discussion is way too abstract. Also that we need to get down to actual examples, person mentions automated checks of bank transfers, wrong answers by chatbots... thanks for that.
Answer by moderator is (paraphrased 😉) that it is normal if people do not really know what they are talking about that they talk in the abstract. Probably a fair summary of what drives #AIHype to an extent.

Microsoft person tells us in grave voice "this (AI) is going to be powering the economy of the future (...) and we need to make sure citizens are protected".
They are incredibly good in spinning this narrative of unavoidability (to the point where the Microsoft lobbyist here has a voice that any radio station would kill for) - too bad what we get in the end is stuff like their recall feature it seems.

I find it incredibly fascinating at these events on "AI governance" that the discussion is incredibly vague, everyone is talking and feeling great in their own scifi story. Tellingly one speaker just had a Freudian slip, replacing extraterritorial with extraterrestrial.
Now one hour in and I have not heard any concrete example of the material object of policy or even concrete harm. I bet some people have some in their head but it must be a wild zoo of ideas.

Ok, a first brave suggestion not to talk about "AI" anymore but algorithmic decision systems. Thanks.
The UN person on the panel is very sober as well and mentions the SDGs and sustainbility implications. Nice! They also mention something along the lines of the UN playing a role in helping to resolve "emergencies" through "AI", now we are back in the Terminator realm it seems. 👾

I am at the Internet Governance Forum Switzerland #SwissIGF24 and up until now it has been basically a #AIHype forum.
Cranked to 11 🎸 - one hour in and "AI" has already been likened to "the most important invention since the internal combustion engine", it is "exciting, exhilerating and terrifying".
The format (quite open) is nice though so I hope things will settle down soon.
