  6. £28m plans to tackle Stairfoot gridlock

More lanes doesn't tackle gridlock. We should have learnt that years ago. How about spending the £28 on more public transport and #supertram extensions to #Barnsley ?

  7. Public #transport fares in South #Yorkshire will be frozen from New Year’s Day 2026, with a reduction to the adult long-distance #Supertram single fare. From 1 January, all Supertram fares will remain at current levels, while the adult long-distance single will fall from £3.40 to £3, matching the national bus fare cap. Child concessionary fares will stay at £1 per journey across buses and trams. The decision, approved by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority in November, is intended to ease cost-of-living pressures and encourage greater use of public transport. The changes follow Supertram’s return to public control and form part of wider investment plans, including network upgrades, a new tram-train station at Magna and preparations for bus franchising in 2027. Child travel initiatives, including the Barnsley MiCard pilot offering free bus travel for young people, will continue to inform future regional plans.

  8. #Supertram in South #Yorkshire has reached a milestone of 10 million passenger journeys since returning to public control, just over a year after its takeover on 22 March 2024. This achievement follows a successful trial allowing #dogs on #trams, with over 1,800 dogs onboard so far. Since public control was regained, £15.3 million has been invested to improve the network, leading to increased passenger numbers, higher revenue, and 97% tram reliability for 2024/2025. A new #Tram #Train station at #Magna is set to open in Winter 2025. The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority plans to purchase a new tram fleet by 2032, contingent on government funding. The £100 million capital improvement programme aims to further enhance the network. Mayor Oliver Coppard praised the progress and reaffirmed his commitment to a world-class public transport system for South Yorkshire. Supertram operates on 100% renewable energy, with accessible trams and stops.

  13. A trial allowing #dogs on #trams has been launched after a public consultation in South #Yorkshire, where 75% of over 10,600 respondents supported the change. From 21 March, dogs will be allowed to travel on trams, following existing policies on buses and trains. Each passenger can bring one well-behaved dog on #Supertram. The trial's outcome will decide if the rule becomes permanent.

  14. @straphanger I remember something similar in #Sheffield almost 20 years ago. I used to take the #Supertram to a supermarket in Hillsborough, and on the way back in rush hour you could be stood at the stop for 10-15 minutes, with the tram in sight, before it covered the 250m to the stop.

Then the council announced they were putting up cameras to enforce the existing tram gate. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, then all the problems suddenly stopped and everyone forgot about it.
