  1. Penguin Random House hopes copyright bluster will scare off generative AI

As Walled Culture has reported, a number of major publishers have brought legal actions against generative AI companies, alleging copyright infringement. These cases are still grinding through the courts, but one publisher, Penguin Random House – one of the so-called “Big Five” publishing houses that dominate the industry worldwide – is not simply sitting back and waiting for the […]

  2. Forgotten books and how to save them

On the Neglected Books site, there is a fine meditation on rescuing forgotten writers and their works from oblivion, and why this is important. As its author Brad Bigelow explains:

I have been searching for neglected books for over forty years and the one thing I can say with unshakeable confidence is that there are more great (and even just […]

  6. @torrentfreak Copyright should go back to 14 years, with one 14-year renewal term. This would follow the letter and spirit of the #Constitution, as copyright was originally intended to be.

#copyright was never intended to be a continuing income stream for the creator, and certainly not for the #heirs and #estates.

  9. Reading IFLA's 'Navigating Copyright for Libraries' (reviewing for Library Life). 1st chapter is on historical development of Copyright. It's fascinating. (Truly!) In England, Copyright emerged from Christian Church & State wanting to suppress dissenting ideas, & the commercial motivation of printers. Concepts of public good & author rights came later as embodied in The Statute of Anne. Back then copyright was for14yrs. Compare that to our (NZ) 50, soon to be 70 yrs! #Copyright #StatuteOfAnne
