Wachsende Lücke bei CO2-Entnahme
Die #CO2-Entnahme aus der #Atmosphäre gilt für das Ziel, eine #Klimaerwärmung von maximal 1,5 Grad gegenüber der vorindustriellen Zeit zu erreichen, als unerlässlich. Aber es zeigt sich eine wachsende Lücke: Nationale Zusagen zu „Carbon Dioxide Removal“ (#CDR) blieben bis 2050 um mehr als fünf Mrd. Tonnen pro Jahr hinter den Mengen zurück, die benötigt werden, zeigt eine neue Bestandsaufnahme.
In dem 2023 erschienenen ersten CDR-Bericht kam man bereits zum Schluss, dass die Möglichkeiten der #Kohlendioxid'entnahme massiv ausgebaut werden müssten. Jährlich würden nur zwei Mrd. Tonnen CO2 abgeschieden – bei einem Ausstoß von fast 40 Mrd. Tonnen. Mit dem nun schon dritten Bericht legen Experten unter Leitung der University of Oxford, der deutschen Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (#SWP), dem Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung (#PIK) und zweier US-Hochschulen eine aktualisierte weltweite Bestandsaufnahme vor.

Removing #CO2 from the atmosphere is considered essential to achieving the goal of limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. But a growing gap is emerging: A new assessment shows that national commitments to “Carbon Dioxide Removal” (#CDR) fall short of the required amounts by more than five billion tons per year through 2050.
