  1. Is #soylentnews down? Thats my main source of news, was wondering what happened to it.

  2. CW: Политика, но про Soylent News

Интересно, сайт Soylent News всё ещё пропускает «новости» из Раша Тудей и ко. или после февраля известного года до них что-то дошло? 🤔

    #lang_ru #soylentnews #сайты

  3. @Riyadh144 @tess Agreed. So what's less bad than ads to cover the cost of writing and hosting to ensure a site's #sustainability?
    - #PayPerPage fails because of cards' 0.30 USD #SwipeFee.
    - #Subscription per site (such as a news #paywall) discourages people from reading and citing articles on a site because readers are less willing to buy a month's or year's subscription to yet another site just for one article.
    - Federated subscription under #AdultCheck worked for a few years until a magazine publisher sued them out of existence for not policing infringement by members.
    - Tax-funded publishing reduces independence from the #StateMedia party line.
    - Running a platform as a hobby isn't sustainable, as I've seen recently with #Miraheze and #SoylentNews threatening to close.
    Is #LightningNetwork the answer?

  4. Current progress on #SoylentNews is that the database is using multiple UTF-8 encodings, and I have that horrid experience that things might actually depend on this behavior and I'm scared ...

  5. @sultmhoor Coincidentally I came across this post: mastodon.gamedev.place/@burger

Note the first two words in the definitions of both “we need to rewrite it” and “#LegacyCode”: “It works.” If it’s profitable, you can pay down #TechnicalDebt with minimum “interest.”

But @ncommander admits #SoylentNews never had a sustainable business or community governance model.

Does #Perl lack millions of cheap commodity #programmers? Yes. But the ones it has are force multipliers.

    But sure, blame the language.

  6. I just read @ncommander 's post about the shutdown of #SoylentNews and the one thing that really struck me was this:

    >Growth of some sort is important because communities have a natural attrition rate.

It makes me wonder when #HackerNews is going to suffer the same fate.

  8. @ncommander

    Thank you for the work.
Could you post #SoylentNews status here since
soylentnews.org has been down for a while now? Just noticed soylentnews.org is up.
