SOTDL session 4.
Our first big fight! More or less 22 Novice-level characters involved, in different ways and at different stages of the combat.
It took 2 hours (with a little interaction break in the middle) to play it out. It went kinda smooth, and faster than you' d think, though I discovered I don't like the Initiative system as much as I thought I would. Too much wrapping your head around what you'd like to do and how to translate that in mechanics, or none at all.

I can't stop thinking about SOTDL, a rather uncomplicated system for its page count that is grounded in well known and proven concepts.
Now
I've been in RPGs for 44 years now.
The majority of the games I run (like.. 98%?) are either OSR or "trad" systems with class and level in the fantasy genre. I'm, nine times out of ten, the GM.
So, excuse me, I know very well what I'm doing.
And yet... and yet I feel like something eludes me when I run SOTDL.
And I can't put my finger on it.

Third session of SOTDL. The intro adventure from Tales of the Demon Lord is over, from now on I'm just using Crossings as a base but not following the campaign's plot. They managed to survive the adventure thanks to playing smart, although the Ghoul killed one PC and three NPCs before they could put it down. So far the players are enjoying how the game and character development work. Magic made a big impression.

BTW. Talking about TODL for SOTD, the Ghoul in scenario 1 makes no sense. Why would the cultists leave it behind? Why wouldn't the PCs squeeze it for all possible info on the raid on Moore House? I think I'm going to remove it.

As cool as the initiative system looks in SOTDL, it takes some wrapping your head around it, especially with such codified actions as those in Shadows. Also, replacing individual rats with a Swarm may not have been a good idea as it seemed at first.

My copy of Shadow of the Weird Wizard arrived. It looks very cool. I never actually played Shadow of the Demon Lord, but I liked a lot of the concepts. I don’t know if we’ll get a game together any time soon though. Too many games to try.

First session of SotDL,
Character creation was pretty fast and as fun as you can immagine thanks to the tables (we have a devotee/soldier Dwarf, a hunter/Sex-worker Changeling and a pick-pocket/carpenter Human. All of which badly in need of money).
I hadn't realized how much a lot of stuff is going to be a 50%/50% pass/fail at first, which gives challenge rolls a weird significance..

Prepping for a Shadow of the Demon Lord campaign I've read a few official adventures.
Rather simple affairs that come off as vaguely disappointing. Nontheless I think stuff should be tried out before a final judgment, so I'll start things using Tales of the Demon Lord, though I may end up ignoring the campaign (I'm surprised how much of the important stuff happens behind the curtains without any actual player involvment) and just use Crossings as the PC's base.

Choosing between them is like choosing between children… who you also don't play with. 🤔

I hear #WHFRP 4e is fairly close to 2e, but I’ve not had time to look into it, sadly, and it also strikes me as a bit premium-pricy anyway—not something I can do much anymore.
