Plus, NZ being a nation of gardeners, we were not satisfied with nine pretty NZ species and so we also plant at least 14 exotic *Sophora* species in our gardens. Plus we plant assorted ornamental cultivars and hybrids of NZ and exotic species.
In our cities, a lot of these are hybridising naturally which makes identifications challenging. It also makes properly ecosourcing kōwhai seeds for restoration projects impossible in and near NZ cities.
