  1. State Highway 1 north of Dunedin is closed for a while between Evansdale and Waikouaiti due to a diesel spillage.

"It’s understood a milk tanker has lost traction and is across three lanes of the highway."

A witness said traffic is backed up to Waitati."

  4. The National Party really hate having to fund public health.

Addressing a shortage of mental health workers in Wanaka, National's Waitaki MP Miles Anderson proposes whipping a third of Dunedin's 300 workers and transferring them to Central Otago.

Just like that. In his tiny mind that would "solve" one problem.

Anderson also suggested "too much was being spent on the new Dunedin hospital project and some of that money should have been directed at the growing Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes districts."

The bigger issue is deliberate under-funding by the Luxon government and their ongoing transfer of public health funding to the private sector.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul is no way to run a health service.

  5. Once again, the Nats are defunding health services in the south.

A highly successful Dunedin-based needle-exchange programme which has been operating since 1988, has lost its contract. South Island funding for the service has been reduced from $1.4 million to $1m.

The Nats have killed a great community service to save a mere $400k. I hope NZ's landlords appreciate the sacrifice our poorer communities are making to fund their tax breaks.

  6. The Dunedin Hospital rebuild is still in limbo.

The original arrangement included a shared-risk deal with the preferred contractor, CPB. Overruns would be shared between the company and the government, offering a good deal for taxpayers. This was the cheapest option.

In a spectacular display of mismanagement which has uncanny parallels with their screwing up the Cook Strait ferry project, National shut down the rebuild and demanded the project stick to a budget set seven years earlier. As if building costs somehow remained static over this time.

Meanwhile the hospital building site sits empty and the tradies have moved on to other work.

  7. The Port Chalmers road is full of container & logging trucks and the Port lacks storage space. Calder Stewart's announcement last week of a 200ha inland facility north of Milton, covered in solar, with direct connections to SH1 & the main trunk rail line. The rail connection will remove 10,000 heavy truck trips from the road each year. Even better, the entire $3bn project will be privately financed by Calder Stewart.

A few days later, Shane Jones announced the government was giving Port Otago and Dynes Transport an $8.2m loan for a competing plan to put an inland port in Mosgiel. This can only proceed if NZTA funds a heavy traffic bypass, which they’ve said they won’t do. And I’m sure Mosgiel folks don’t want a massive increase in trucking movements to clog their roads.

Whatever happened to ‘let the market decide’? Trust this coalition to back the wrong horse.
