  1. Dunedin NZDN → Oamaru NZOU

Leaving the Taieri Plains, I flew over Dunedin into the hills before picking up State Highway 1 again. Today's destination was (a windy and gusty) Oamaru, located near South Island's eastern coast.

  2. Balclutha Aerodrome NZBA → Dunedin NZDN

This time, instead of following State Highway 1 from Balclutha, I head toward the coast and trace it northward. At the mouth of the Taieri River, I turn back inland, soon entering the Taieri Plains where Dunedin Airport comes into view just a few miles out.

  3. State Highway 1 north of Dunedin is closed for a while between Evansdale and Waikouaiti due to a diesel spillage.

"It’s understood a milk tanker has lost traction and is across three lanes of the highway."

A witness said traffic is backed up to Waitati."

  6. now the building might be a neglected liability that costs millions to keep from falling down. but for $88k you might as well propose that the public pays YOU to TAKE the building #dunedin

  7. i love how real estate is a ballooning nightmare until some politician wants to deal themselves into an historic building for about $88k #dunedin

  8. CW: Unknown Dunedin activists remove Israeli flag

Hot tip: if you decide to visit a Dunedin beach, it's best to leave your pro-genocide symbolism at home.

  11. New Zealand capital delights in rare snowfall as southern city residents ski down world’s steepest street
    By Eva Corlett in Wellington

Snow falls in Wellington for the first time in 15 years while snow blanketed Dunedin and Christchurch on the country’s south island

  12. We have snow at Long Beach. My house is surrounded by white stuff. Mt Cargill Rd and Blueskin Rd are both closed, meaning there is no route into Dunedin.

There's a cold southerly, temperature is 2° - feels like -1° and it's freezing outside.

Naturally there is chaos on Dunedin roads.

  13. I enjoyed this lovely video of my old home town, Dunedin/Ōtepoti and its heritage buildings in the central city. Great to see the Vogel Street Kitchen shown - always my favourite port of call for a breakfast when I am visiting. I must admit the word 'heritage' can be a bit triggering sometimes as it is so often associated with white privilege in suburbs like Thorndon or Mt Eden where it is used as a justification for keeping the poors at a distance. That doesn't seem to be the case in Dunedin/Ōtepoti at least.

  14. The ODT launched its new website this week. It has a cleaner look, although a higher proportion of stories appear to be stuffed behind a paywall.

And unfortunately, Reader View no longer bypasses their paywall.

    Luckily smry.ai does. ;-)

  15. CW: Arrest - Wellington mosque threat

An 18 year old Dunedin man has been arrested for making an online bomb threat against the Kilbirnie Masjid Mosque in Wellington.

The mosque has been closed since Thursday due to this fool's behaviour. I hope he's treated and charged as a terrorist.

  16. For Otago O-week the Students’ Assn sets up "Tent City" outside the museum, where vendors serve a continuous audience of fresh students.

This year, as part of their Boycott Divest and Sanction (BDS) position, the OUSA "disallowed" Domino’s Pizza because of their role in Israel's ongoing genocide.

ODT adds, "the Israeli Institute of NZ & the NZ Jewish Council have been approached for comment."

    ODT didn't contact any Palestinians?

  17. Shane Reti has released a pile of papers from three and four years ago detailing various problems with the Dunedin hospital rebuild.

There's no smoking gun. Management of the project was difficult at times for many reasons, including "decisions were being made by ministers and their ministries".

The ODT, bless their parochial hearts, have put this behind a paywall. Because who needs a wider audience!

Here are two good responses to Reti.

  18. * National Party declares war on Dunedin *

Our mayor met with Shane Reti yesterday & was told "the previous clinical cuts to the hospital had been reversed."

But in parliament just hours later, Reti switched tack & indicated a phased build instead. Construction would take place in & around a working hospital, for years.

The Nats' wealth transfer to the super-rich demands more sacrifice.

May Reti choke on his forked tongue.
