"It’s understood a milk tanker has lost traction and is across three lanes of the highway."

A witness said traffic is backed up to Waitati."

  10. now the building might be a neglected liability that costs millions to keep from falling down. but for $88k you might as well propose that the public pays YOU to TAKE the building #dunedin

  11. i love how real estate is a ballooning nightmare until some politician wants to deal themselves into an historic building for about $88k #dunedin

Hot tip: if you decide to visit a Dunedin beach, it's best to leave your pro-genocide symbolism at home.

  15. New Zealand capital delights in rare snowfall as southern city residents ski down world’s steepest street
    By Eva Corlett in Wellington

Snow falls in Wellington for the first time in 15 years while snow blanketed Dunedin and Christchurch on the country’s south island

  16. We have snow at Long Beach. My house is surrounded by white stuff. Mt Cargill Rd and Blueskin Rd are both closed, meaning there is no route into Dunedin.

There's a cold southerly, temperature is 2° - feels like -1° and it's freezing outside.

Naturally there is chaos on Dunedin roads.

  17. I enjoyed this lovely video of my old home town, Dunedin/Ōtepoti and its heritage buildings in the central city. Great to see the Vogel Street Kitchen shown - always my favourite port of call for a breakfast when I am visiting. I must admit the word 'heritage' can be a bit triggering sometimes as it is so often associated with white privilege in suburbs like Thorndon or Mt Eden where it is used as a justification for keeping the poors at a distance. That doesn't seem to be the case in Dunedin/Ōtepoti at least.

  18. The ODT launched its new website this week. It has a cleaner look, although a higher proportion of stories appear to be stuffed behind a paywall.

And unfortunately, Reader View no longer bypasses their paywall.

    Luckily smry.ai does. ;-)

  20. A Dunedin man maintains name suppression while facing charges of rape & sexual violation. The only published facts are that he's "a prominent Dunedin man" who's "aged in his 30s".

That word "prominent" is always intriguing.

  21. Lots of great songs, but one major hit:

"The seasons fall and leaves have turned to gold
And the wind blows cold from the south
Not sure what I wanted from you, girl
But I think it’s time that we found out"

  24. I'm always surprised when kiwi business people out themselves as Trump supporters.

Today's knob-of-the-week is Michael McCarrigan who owns the Duke of Wellington pub in Dunedin -- the old Wharf Hotel. He flew to Washington for the orange coronation and ended up standing in the cold with thousands of other MAGA supporters.

Silly man could've saved money by just tattooing "Not a critical thinker" on his forehead. Numpty!

  25. Dunedin news. A truck full of woodchips was coming down Stuart Street this morning when witnesses heard it accelerate. A medical event is the likely cause.

The truck missed Robbie Burns but the bus shelter below is seriously munted and there are woodchips everywhere.
