  1. After Monday's news that our small colony of penguins had been wiped out by a dog attack, it's good to hear some positive wildlife stories from the Dunedin area.

Otago's pakake (NZ sea lion) population is slowly growing and on its way to becoming a breeding colony. For DOC to declare that status, at least 35 pups must be born for five consecutive seasons.

Coyly, the story only refers to "more than 35 pups" being born this year.

  2. We don't really have street violence in Dunedin, so twenty teens being involved in a mass brawl in the main street outside Mickie D's is notable.

Cops located the teens nearby, but an unrelated, 67 year old, irritating pensioner gets in police faces and is arrested. Old guy pushes a cop and it's all on. Old guy tries to strangle a cop, another cop fires pepper spray into the fracas taking out the perp as well as three of their colleagues.

Guess who'll be getting a refresher course in pepper spray 101?

  7. CW: Dunedin - false advertising of collagen product

Here's an odd thing. Dunedin's mayor Sophie Barker and former councillor Jim O'Malley jointly own a company called Ayrmed which sells collagen serum. This stuff sells for $65 for 50ml -- $1,300 per litre.

The problem is the company's advertised claims that their product is both "magic" and "miraculous", breaching the Advertising Standards Authority’s therapeutic and health advertising code. Professor of consumer behaviour at Otago Robert Aitken agrees such unsubstantiated claims cannot be used.

Here's where it gets weird. Instead of removing the offending claims, O'Malley has gone into fight or flight mode.

"If the ODT publishes Prof Aitken’s statements, I will have no option but to clear Ayrmed’s name by suing both the University of Otago and the ODT for deformation."

Why on earth is O'Malley digging himself such an enormous hole? And threatening "deformation" just makes him look silly.

A quiet word, Jim. The word is "defamation".

  11. Receiving unverified accounts that tomatoes were squashed by (washed) bare feet in Murdoch Food's Dunedin premises at least into the early 1960s.

    Yum.

    New Zealand born,
    New Zealand bred,
    tinea tomatoes,

More details of Murdoch Dunedin factory sought (idle interest only).

  12. Dunedin has experienced another sea lion occupation, this time in a fish and chip shop in St Kilda. It was blocking their entrance so staff tried to tempt her outside with fish, but that didn't work.

“It just kind of lay there and didn’t really do much.”

There's a happy ending because DOC came and moved the animal.

  13. Amongst the darkness, a sea lion story will hopefully bring a smile.

A family in Saint Clair has had a heavily pregnant sea lion move into their front porch for the foreseeable future. They can't use the door for now.

  14. In NZ's deep south it's sea lion breeding season. Female sea lions try to avoid males by moving inland and they end up in all sorts of silly places, like the one in this ODT story.

Here in Long Beach our sea lions are generally well behaved. They raise their pups in the sand dunes and never venture across the domain toward the houses. At least, they haven't so far.

May they enjoy a fruitful season.

  15. Three sovereign citizens walked into the Dunedin courthouse yesterday and demanded to see a judge. It turned out they wanted to sue the court.

Naturally court staff weren't very helpful, so the three locked themselves into a room and refused to come out. Twelve cops arrived and arrested them.

The trio, aged 48-62, will appear in Dunedin Court charged with trespass and refusing to provide a DNA sample. The 62-year-old was also charged with refusing to supply photograph and fingerprints.

Dumb conspiracies really don't apply in the real world. FAFO.

  16. Has anyone ever heard of the German-born artist Wolfgang Wasserlicht, aka 'The Rembrandt of the Road'?

I found this story about his life and work in the USA and New Zealand, but cannot locate any other references to the man himself, despite his work fetching high prices at auction.

Similarly, the Gallery Godelpus mentioned in the article doesn't seem to have any digital footprint.

    Leads most welcome...

  17. A "high profile" Dunedin man has been convicted of dealing meth and possessing an arsenal of weapons. The man, aged in his 60s, has interim name suppression while he faces further charges. He was sentenced to just 22 months in pokie, which seems fairly light to me.

Oh... and he's already in jail for "other drug-related offending".

  18. It's been an excellent year for the albatross colony at Taiaroa Head. This year 38 chicks fledged and trackers show they've flown around 2800km across the Pacific Ocean in the last month.

Taiaroa Head is the NZ mainland's only northern royal albatross breeding colony.

  19. Whatever is going on at Columba College? The principal of the elite Dunedin girls' school has been on leave for three months. She emailed staff saying she was returning, only for the board to say "No, she's still on leave."

Amidst allegations of bullying there are suggestions that the instability is caused by "snobbery and anti-woke stuff" from "a core of influential, long-standing, "very conservative" staff members."

Some claim that the principal's "overtly religious rhetoric" alienated some students and staff. She removed a rainbow youth poster in front of students.

"On a non-uniform day, girls were instructed not to wear sleeveless attire because it made men "uncomfortable".

A teacher was told by a chaplain their classroom was possessed by an evil presence and the staff prayer group (featuring the principal) needed to cleanse it.

The chaplain allowed one girl to lead a prayer for the dead Nazi, Charlie Kirk.

It sounds like an intervention may be required.

  20. Wait up, Dunedin. The Albany St cycleway project which was cancelled last month is miraculously back on track.

The 8-7 vote was made possible when Cr Jim O'Malley, having reflected on things he'd previously said about the project's opponents, re-entered the arena and saved the day.

Voted for: Barker, Benson-Pope, Garey, Gilbert, Laufiso, Mayhem, O'Malley, Walker.

Voted against: Radich, Acklin, Houlahan, Lucas, Vandervis, Weatherall & Whiley.

  22. This one has an MO where she tries to grab all the bond money at the end of each tenancy, hoping students won't fight back. I'll bet she gets away with that fraud more often than not. As Critic says:

"Karen has been awarded thousands of dollars from her tenants’ bonds over the past two years."

With multiple houses, she'll have done well out of Luxon's handouts to landlords. Whereas for the mould and decay alone, MBIE should have come down on her like a ton of bricks.

  23. The Port Chalmers road is full of container & logging trucks and the Port lacks storage space. Calder Stewart's announcement last week of a 200ha inland facility north of Milton, covered in solar, with direct connections to SH1 & the main trunk rail line. The rail connection will remove 10,000 heavy truck trips from the road each year. Even better, the entire $3bn project will be privately financed by Calder Stewart.

A few days later, Shane Jones announced the government was giving Port Otago and Dynes Transport an $8.2m loan for a competing plan to put an inland port in Mosgiel. This can only proceed if NZTA funds a heavy traffic bypass, which they’ve said they won’t do. And I’m sure Mosgiel folks don’t want a massive increase in trucking movements to clog their roads.

Whatever happened to ‘let the market decide’? Trust this coalition to back the wrong horse.

  38. A newly rebuilt drystone walled section of road; Portobello Rd, Dunedin .At a guess 10 km, but a local may correct me. Well done to the stonemasons who dedicated their craft to lay stone ( instead of modern concrete shoring technique that has little character in comparison)
Sections of this harbour drive were widened as well for a cycle/ walkway. Can do a full circle by crossing the harbour on a small ferry and riding the trail to the city and back.
