  2. now the building might be a neglected liability that costs millions to keep from falling down. but for $88k you might as well propose that the public pays YOU to TAKE the building #dunedin

  3. i love how real estate is a ballooning nightmare until some politician wants to deal themselves into an historic building for about $88k #dunedin

  4. CW: Unknown Dunedin activists remove Israeli flag

Hot tip: if you decide to visit a Dunedin beach, it's best to leave your pro-genocide symbolism at home.

  7. New Zealand capital delights in rare snowfall as southern city residents ski down world’s steepest street
    By Eva Corlett in Wellington

Snow falls in Wellington for the first time in 15 years while snow blanketed Dunedin and Christchurch on the country’s south island

  8. We have snow at Long Beach. My house is surrounded by white stuff. Mt Cargill Rd and Blueskin Rd are both closed, meaning there is no route into Dunedin.

There's a cold southerly, temperature is 2° - feels like -1° and it's freezing outside.

Naturally there is chaos on Dunedin roads.

  9. I enjoyed this lovely video of my old home town, Dunedin/Ōtepoti and its heritage buildings in the central city. Great to see the Vogel Street Kitchen shown - always my favourite port of call for a breakfast when I am visiting. I must admit the word 'heritage' can be a bit triggering sometimes as it is so often associated with white privilege in suburbs like Thorndon or Mt Eden where it is used as a justification for keeping the poors at a distance. That doesn't seem to be the case in Dunedin/Ōtepoti at least.

  10. The ODT launched its new website this week. It has a cleaner look, although a higher proportion of stories appear to be stuffed behind a paywall.

And unfortunately, Reader View no longer bypasses their paywall.

    Luckily smry.ai does. ;-)

  11. CW: Climate change - more Dunedin flooding

While the big rain from last week has largely drained away, residents of Marne and Somerville Streets in Andersons Bay were flooded this afternoon by a king tide.

They're right beside the harbour. Marne Street runs along the side of the inlet while Somerville St joins that.

I can't recall this area flooding before but I'm willing to be corrected.

  12. It's another stunningly beautiful winter morning in the south. The sky is blue, the sun's shining, there's no wind and it's currently -1°C. That may sound unnecessarily cool to folk who live in sub-tropical Auckland, but honestly, it's fresh and it's bracing.*

There are numerous road warnings in place, mainly in Central Otago.

    * Sure, I'm wearing merino polyprops, a hat, scarf and ski jacket. It's my winter uniform.
