OK, here’s the answer to turning off “Smart Replies” in Messages on macOS, courtesy of the ever-wonderful Ricky Mondello (who you should follow; I won’t @ them here because I don’t want to spam them as their post about this was followers-only):
System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Input Sources (Edit) > Show suggested replies
This appears to be a new setting 👏

Siri is getting progressively worse as each month goes by. It can’t even do stuff it used to do a few years ago…
I ask it to do a currency conversion and it gives me these unrelated web search results instead 🤦♂️
(it’d be fun to see someone try the queries from Scott Forstall’s 2011 Siri introduction, and/or subsequent keynotes, to see how many it fails or gives worse results for)

On the way to the gym I tried to ask Siri how many Exercise minutes I’d already done today and… nope.
Here we are, 450+ days later and the Siri + Health features haven’t expanded beyond US English and Chinese Mandarin.

p.s. In case you think that turning off “Show Siri Suggestions in application” will help, I can assure you it does not affect this functionality in macOS 15.3.
Currently the only way to turn off Smart Replies in Messages is to turn off Apple Intelligence completely.
And yes, I did submit feedback to request a setting to control this: FB16819135

There needs to be a specific option to turn off these “Smart Replies” in Messages. Every single one of them so far has been terrible – out of context, missing the point, etc.
I’d love to see the reactions from friends and family if I used any one of the suggested replies. They would be very confused/offended.
Also, if you ask Siri how to turn them off, it gives you an incorrect answer about turning off message summaries.

I was hoping iOS 18.1 would fix it, but sadly Siri is still failing at doing a currency conversion that has worked for the past 10 years, until iOS 18.0…
“Siri what’s twenty Australian dollars in Taiwanese dollars”
Siri searches the web instead of doing the conversion 🤦♂️

Next iOS 18 bug: When I ask Siri to turn off/on Transparency or Noise Cancellation, it does it, but then says whatever was requested was already off/on.
E.g. Transparency is currently off and I say “Siri turn on transparency mode”
Transparency then turns on and Siri says “Transparency is already turned on”.

At the very least it should show the text that it’s speaking, particularly given it’ll prompt you for whether you want to know the details of the next notification (but you don’t know it’s asking about that because you don’t see or hear the question, the Siri bubble just appears and you don’t know why).
This is with “Spoken Responses” set to “Control with Silent Mode” and with “Always Show Siri Captions” turned on.

If you ask #Siri on #AppleWatch, “what’s my most recent notification?” (or similar variations) it’ll start reading the details of your notifications…
But if you have your Apple Watch in Silent Mode like I do 100% of the time, Siri doesn’t show the notification(s) or the text of what it’s saying, you just get a blank screen with nothing happening for however long it takes for it to silently read its script, with no idea of why unless you think to unsilence it.
